SCEA: PSP piracy is “trending down”
SCEA’s John Koller’s told MTV that the firm’s seeing a reduction in the amount of PSP piracy in recent months.
“We’ve made really no secret [that there] certainly has been some piracy on the PSP,” said the marketing exec.
“We’ve seen that as a significant issue — it’s trending down right now, we’ve seen the piracy not be as such prevalent in the last month to two months. But it has been a problem for us.”
Koller added that SCEA monitors piracy of the handheld on forums.
“We’ve noticed there’s kind of a ‘good vs. evil’ battle that we track on many of the forums and many of the pirated web sites,” he added.
“There’s certainly people that are standing up and fighting for what we consider the good side, the rights of developers and publishers to make money on their IP.”
More through there.

Oh no, Sony, don’t get hung up on concepts as entirely vague as good and evil. To grasp the concept of a subjective viewpoint, one need only look at good and evil. Unless each side is willfully aware that they’re causing suffering, they’re going to consider themselves the “good” in any situation. It’s “us” versus “them”, and in any situation, “us” is da good guys, and “them” is da evil gits. That’s really all there is to good and evil.
A better viewpoint would be to consider suffering and relief thereof. Every person has a centred point between the two, and the worthiness of actions should look at which way the balance is tipped for the individual and/or the group. Where is the suffering in a piracy-laden corporate culture, and where’s the real blame for that?
I don’t care to say. But I’ll leave that one open for debate if anyone wants to.

Piracy may well be trending downwards owing to the dearth of recent AAA PSP titles.

You think piracy has anything to do with the quality of the item being pirated?
Go to a game ranking site. Find the lowest scoring game there. I gurantee you it’s been pirated.

There’s been a dearth of recent titles, never mind AAA titles. Hardly anything out in the last few months.

If new games aren’t coming out, let alone really good new games, then the chances are that people are either playing what they already have or aren’t playing PSP any more.
Therefore piracy trending downwards isn’t exactly a major surprise. Bearing in mind that pirates really don’t a toss about IP ownership and developers getting their fair due, I really don’t think that the reduction in piracy is down to any kind of ‘debate’ on whether ripping off games is the right thing to do or not.
