Jaffe sees God of War III, pops cork

godofwarii.jpg

Following reports of a CGI-quality God of War III being shown in London last week, David Jaffe’s posted that the game looks “like a painting come to life” after seeing it in Santa Monica.

From here:

ps. I saw GOD OF WAR III when I was in Santa Monica last week. I can and will not give away details. But I think it’s ok for me to say two things:

a- HOLY HOLY HOLY FUCKING HELL!!!!
b- I thought GEARS OF WARS 2 looked about as good as a next-gen game could look….and that game is currently- and will probably remain- my game of the year. And hell, I think I actually get to vote on that kind of stuff in some circles :) And unless I get blown away by POP or something else I missed, GEARS 2 is the SHIT….this year. Dudes and dudettes, fucking WAIT till you see the amazing graphics…just fucking wait. And yes, Xbots, accuse me all you want of being a Sony fanboy. Just remember two things:

#1- I just said GEARS 2 is the BEST fucking playing and looking game of the year….better than any PS3 game. And there are some damn good PS3 games, I feel.

#2- FUCK YOU! I ain’t no fan boy but this mother fucking game looks like nothing you’ve ever played…and you can hold me to that when this thing hits and when they start showing gameplay footage. It looks like a painting come to life- it’s THAT good looking.

Probably worth being excited about, then. There’s no date on it, obviously.

The fact that this guy is in charge of anything never fails to amaze. He comes over like a GameFAQs forumite. :-D

I can’t believe he said Xbots. Jaffe rules, simply because he swears more than any other muthafucka in gaming.

I know it ain’t gonna happen, but I wish Epic could port Gears 2 to PS3. Even if it was yet another sub-standard PS3 port it would mean I could at least play it.

Gears, the one and only thing I miss about my old 360.

I like Jaffe, he’s passionate and he reflects gamer mentality right back at gamers – the reaction to such behaviour is always ironically amusing.

As for being in charge of stuff, I think people read far far far too much in to a couple of comments by people on the internet and believe that it sums up their entire persona and abilities. Besides, the guy’s repeatedly proved he’s got the credentials to lead game development.

And, as big a fanboy of God of War as I am, I can’t help thinking that Jaffe’s a bit biased.

But then, isn’t everyone?

Mr. Jaffe, when you talk (shout in this case) about it too much, you are probably not getting any :P

Oh and g00nerz, you can come to my house and play Gears 2 if you want. I’ve had it since launch and not even opened the box. ;)

Needs more swearing. That said, looking forward to the game, hopefully will be good.

@Shatner

Tidy darts, on my way over now. Erm, where do you live again?!

Oops, better watch what I say or I might be seen as an internet predator trying to ‘groom’ my prey. hahah! How old are you? Hope you are over 16 or I’m done for.

All joking aside, what game were you playing that kept you from the apparently seminal Gears2?

God of War 3 is the only thing on the radar so far to make me want a PS3. C’mon, Sony – make with the price cuts on the damn thing!

g00nerz:

I’ve been too busy on weeknights to do any proper heavyweight gaming. Mainly playing Castlevania on DS and playing LBP with the wife on PS3.

I’ve been buying games on Saturdays and beating them on Sundays. Mirror’s Edge one week and Tomb Raider yesterday.

Tomb Raider’s pretty good. Doesn’t re-invent the wheel, it’s a bit buggy, but it’s well designed and more challenging than the last two.

I always liked Jaffe. He acting like a fucking human being in a industry smothered in PR suits.

I’m sure God of War 3 will be great. I just frankly wish there was more than two games every year on the PS3 worth thinking about. Unless someone can point out anything on the PS3 to me that’s worth getting remotely enthused about next year, other than Heavy Rain.

And please, dear god don’t say Killzone 2. I prefer my games to have at least *one* inventive quality about them to even matter. It’s just another FPS with a testosterone problem.

I don’t quite get the point about PS3 graphics though. Anyone whose ever bothered to check already knows the Xbox 360 has a more powerful graphics card. Though graphics aren’t a big deal if the game itself is up to scratch.

JP: Actually, I recall him saying that his mother swears like that too. Hardly surprising really.

@Shatner

I actually traded LBP in for Fallout3 yesterday. I’ve had 2 weeks of cutesy jumping around and can’t takes it no more!

Funnily enough the missus was more interested in watching me play Fallout than build a rocket in LBP. Until of course I pasted someone’s brain bits all over the walls with my gun. Chortle. She almost threw up!

The only game on the PS3 radar I’m even remotely interested in… I think I’ll wait for the inevitable slim-line PS3 though.

If that’s true, I want to replace mine with his. We need more mothers like that! What a great woman.

Anyway, it’s surprising to hear rhe game looks better than the teaser does. Not saying the teaser looked bad, not by any stretch of the imagination. However, it didn’t look as good as he’s saying either.

Hopefully Sony will be releasing some media soon so we can see for ourselves.

I imagine Sony are fuming that any of this has leaked out at all! The last thing they’ll want potential buyers to know this Christmas is that a price cut could be coming as soon as March, so they can’t well acknowledge the GoW stuff, without implying that there’s weight to the price cut talk.

Acknowledge what, exactly?

A compliment that a game looks good? I fail to see how *that* would be damaging to them. If anything, it would get people more excited about the game…

Yeah, my fault. I thought Jaffe had seen this at Sony’s recent “below the radar” press event, which obviously, Sony aren’t thrilled at acknowledging. But Jaffe saw this at Santa Monica, so yeah, I’m sure Sony are more than happy to shine the spotlight on his comments.

Jaffe’s a fuckin bug eyed Dick. It seems to me that he is blowing up smoke up fan boys asses, attaching GOW to Gears 2 and hoping to fan the flames, generating buzz along the way.

Ask yourselves one thing, what can the GOW team do that Guerrilla or any of the other strong Sony first party Dev’s cant?

My feeling is that they are using a post process heavy engine akin to KZ2, and I base this theory on his “it’s painting-like” analogy.

But whatever the case may be, I guess we will see sometime in late 09 or early 2010.

Oh come on. The guy *complimented* an Xbox game. That’s something right there, to see a developer actually praising the “competition”.

And even any game that be that impressive, it’s God of War. I’m not big on the whole macho thing, but the God of Wars games have always had an epicness to them that most games could only hope to achieve.

Mike is right.

Maybe, just maybe, this is actually his opinion and not a double-deception coated in bluff and guarded by lies?

I don’t know any “human beings” who say “fuck you!” to their audience when they’re addressing them and actually expect them to listen, tbh.

That’s odd. Pat behaved precisely like that on this site more than once. And, I recall he was quite proud of his “Fuck you” stance to people like Jack Thompson and others.

On the whole though morriss, I agree with you. But I don’t agree with assigning that observation to one group of people and actively ignoring the same (and typically more pronounced) behaviour from another set of people. Principles are meaningless if you only ever apply them selectively.
