Rumour: PS3 price-cutting planned for March, Uncharted 2 and GoW3 shown in UK
DPad’s posted a report based on a source that attended the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing in London on Friday, claiming SCEE president David Reeves said the firm “will be getting more competitive on price from March 2009 onwards.”
Apparently the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet – which the report says has been worked on for the past four months – was shown, as was Uncharted 2 and God of War 3, which looked so good the source claimed it wasn’t really possible to distinguish it from CGI.
There’s a lot of stuff through there: must-read.

I know they’re in a world of hurt financially, but cutting the price in time for Killzone 2′s release is a really smart move. Ideally it would have all happened in time for Christmas, but it’s clear they can’t do that yet, without haemorrhaging a mountain of cash.
Also, I think Sony’s 09 line up is starting to look pretty good. Off the top of my head we’re looking at:
inFamous
Killzone 2
Uncharted 2
Ratchet & Clank: Future: 2
Heavy Rain
God of War 3
MAG
I wonder if they will ever officially announce Tears of Blood?

Hmm… pinch of salt. Would they really plan a price cut that far in advance? Who know what’ll happen between now and then.
His quote about GoW3 actually says that he didn’t know whether it was CGI or not, too – he doesn’t actually know.
That said, GoW has historically been a really great-looking game. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t remain top-notch.

GoW was my favourite franchise from the last generation.
The problem I see is that the PS2 games looked so good that it was hard to believe a crusty old PS2 was running them. So that sort of expectation is there with the third installment and I think it’s going to be impossible to meet.
If they do, great. If they don’t, so be it. So long as the franchise keeps its flavour then all is good.

I didn’t enjoy the second game as much as the first one, but it was still really good.
I hope they don’t try to go too far – keep the graphics within reason and get it running at 60fps without tearing.

Announcing they will drop the price in March now, before Christmas, may hurt their sales even more this Christmas because some people may decided to wait and get one in March when the price goes down.
Of course, that’ll just mean more sales in March for them.

Now LBP PSP is something I could really go for, I reckon. Can’t wait for some more details.

The price cut will probably just be back to current levels anyway …

They can’t seriously be thinking of putting the RRP of a PS3 up can they?

“Reeves then went on to say that the PS3 has a bigger install base than the 360 in PAL territories, and that the install base gap will significantly increase in 2009.”
But…but…MS said it was ahead.
Someone’s lying to us.

MS said that they sold more boxes then Sony did since the price cut, not that they have sold more overall.

I would imagine pre Xmas cut would bode better for them.

Wait…..so it’s 2009 that’s going to be the Year of the PS3 now?

@ morriss
This time they’re probably not lying because “Europe” and “PAL territories” are not the same turf.
So it’s possible for the 360 to be ahead in “Europe” while the PS3 is leading in “PAL territories”.

Yup, PAL territories includes Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and others…

That explains why they never cite GFK / Chart Track when they talk about outselling the 360 in PAL land. GFK / Chart Track don’t cover all those extra countries.

Isn’t pretty much everything apart from North America and Japan PAL territory?

I know Sony is supposed to be quite popular in the middle east.

“looked so good the source claimed it wasn’t really possible to distinguish it from CGI”… Maybe because it was CGI!!! Christ, here we go again! Who the fuck is this “Source” a 5 fucking year old?
Also on the price drop, by March! Wow, it will be way too late, hell it is already too late. Even if they drop to 299, they will not outsell MS in 2009.

I’d like to add the Team ICO game to that list… if out in 09.

If it takes 4 years like the last two then Oct 09 in Japan, and Spring 10 here.
Mind you, ps3 is region free

Also for the list:
Gran Turismo 5
Final Fantasy XIII Verses (Japan, others TBA)
Wardevil
Yakuza 3 (Japan, others TBA)
White Knight Chronicles (Dec 08 for Japan)
LA Noire (though exclusivity rumoured to be in question)
Wipeout PS3 (not HD, a new one, apparently)
… So yeah, quite a few good exclusives for PS3 next year. Also Eye Pet.

I hate Eye Pet and it’s not out yet.
I hate it, not because of the fact it looks like that cutesy wutesy game, it’s because it could have been one of the sole reasons behind the cancelation of Eight Days and The Getaway 3.
