"Star Wars Galaxies didn’t topple it."

A bit of a nitpick here but Star Wars: Galaxies actually came first. I fail to see how Sony could have desired to topple an MMO that didn't exist at the inception of Galaxies, and they were two very different beasts. At least, pre-NGE they were.

"Warhammer Online didn’t topple it."

A ponderously preemptive postmortem. I wish I had your clairvoyance, since Warhammer Online only just recently released, and its popularity seems to be on the rise.

So we have one game that was released before Warcraft, and one game that's too new to have any real relevance.

Better research and examples next time, perhaps?

Star Wars Galaxies didn't topple it.

Lord of the Rings Online didn't topple it.

Age of Conan didn't topple it.

Warhammer Online didn't topple it.

I think what none of these companies seem to realise is that all these people playing World of Warcraft *want* to play it. World of Warcraft also runs on fairly mediocre PCs, a fact which shifts more units than you think.
