With the launch of New Xbox Experience tomorrow, Microsoft’s press released what it claims to be a “new era of entertainment” akin to the launch of the colour television.

We’re about to enter a “bold new future,” apparently, one in which people can stream HD movies and “every experience is shared with friends and families, in the same room or around the world.”

“The future of home entertainment is Xbox 360 – it’s on demand, it’s high definition, it’s always social, it’s all in one place,” said Xbox boss Don Mattrick.

“With the New Xbox Experience we will reach the next generation of Xbox owners, 25 million and beyond. We are at a watershed moment, backed by the largest entertainment brands, with an incredible line up of entertainment unmatched in any industry.”

A New Dawn in Home Entertainment for Everyone Begins November 19
New Xbox Experience Ushers in a New Era of Entertainment with Movie Studios throughout the World

LONDON – Nov. 18, 2008 — In 1954, the introduction of colour TV heralded the dawn of a new era in entertainment. On Nov. 19, more than 50 years after that dramatic shift, a new era in home entertainment begins with the New Xbox Experience as millions of Xbox 360™ consoles will transform instantly through the power of software. A bold new future begins now, where high definition entertainment is delivered in an instant, the best games share the stage with the best movies, and every experience is shared with friends and families, in the same room or around the world.

By the end of this month, Xbox 360 will reach another industry defining milestone: 25 million Xbox 360 consoles sold worldwide. It has taken the leading next generation game and entertainment console just three years to eclipse the total lifetime number of original Xbox consoles sold.

“The future of home entertainment is Xbox 360 – it’s on demand, it’s high definition, it’s always social, it’s all in one place,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “With the New Xbox Experience we will reach the next generation of Xbox owners, 25 million and beyond. We are at a watershed moment, backed by the largest entertainment brands, with an incredible line up of entertainment unmatched in any industry.”

All your Friends and Favorite Entertainment, One Remote Control
With the Nov. 19’s launch of the New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 owners will enjoy a limitless world where the best games, movies and experiences are ready to share with friends across the globe through Xbox LIVE:

Your avatar is your game-face throughout the New Xbox Experience and represents your personality — whether you are a LIVE Party host, playing a game of “Scene It? Box Office Smash” or chatting with a friend.
• On-demand entertainment. Xbox 360 is home to the best High Definition movie entertainment, including a large online library of more than 15,000 on-demand high-definition TV shows and movies from global partners such as Constantin, Disney, MGM, NBC Universal Inc. and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

Xbox LIVE members will also be able to access all of Xbox LIVE Marketplace, including Xbox LIVE Arcade, and even queue content to download straight from Xbox.com.
• Games for the community, by the community. For the first time in the history of console gaming, thousands of games developed by the creative community will be available to the public. The Community Games channel on Xbox LIVE will include games made by students, hobbyists, and maybe even your next door neighbor and will be exclusive to Xbox LIVE.

I love my 16:10 and being able to install games, and other small but welcome improvements, but at the end of the day it’s just a dash update FFS! New era of entertainment LOL

It’s a new era of silence, this I know.

I was simply amazed that the Xbox didn’t have any form of HDD install when I first looked into it, and even the quietest XBox 360 drive makes one hell of a lot of noise. I’ve heard quieter drills.

So there’s that element that raises it above “just a dashboard update” at least.

It should have been added a lot more expediently though if you ask me. And I am given to wonder, how many XBox owners will start installing games now to avoid the drive noise? It’ll be a delicious irony considering that I’ve seen some loudly assert that they don’t need HDD installs, and the PS3 should be mocked for its long install periods.

Anyway, for me, this just bridges the gap between 360 and PS3, and makes the 360 more PS3-like. So it’s good stuff, I think.

I think the key point is that these installs are optional. It would be nicer if there were a way round having to pop the disc in each time you wanted to play – but necessary I suppose.

Pacman Championship is indeed a fantastic game.

360 UI update… not so much really. Listening to the rubbish these execs (MS and Sony) spout symbolises the classic devide between sales and everyone else… everyone else just smells a load of… well you know.

Personally I think the PS3 is a far better setup for most things Media and games and the only thing that lets it down are the games that don’t run so well on it.

Still I’m looking forward to the NXE and it looks like a massive improvement over the old ‘blades’. BTW: weren’t Blades supposed to induce some kind of ‘Zen’ like euphoria… oh yea… that was some other jerk talking… isn’t he working on the Zune project now.
:-D Ahh I’m getting old and cynical about things these days… in a few more years all will be well and I’ll just hate everything by then.
