What does MS have to do with SecurROM? That's Sony's baby. Plus of course the oh so fun Extended Copy Protection rootkit which was included on music CDs.

This will CLEARLY launch with the next Xbox. I was thinking the other day, what the next generation of consoles would be like. The only think I could think of that would be a near 100% certainty, was that they'd have digital download on all games, just like Steam. Having it all downloaded and ready to unlock at midnight on release day. I'm totally convinced this'll happen with the next Xbox.

It seems natural that MS would do this. It is also natural to expect MS to bungle the first rev or two, or three. But perhaps it is the beginning of a ramp up of sorts for an updated XBox 720 distribution model.

Whatever the case, the days of physical media are coming to a close... fast!

Oh please Esha that's a load of hyperbole "rootkit their own operating system" do you even read what your typing.

FYI there is no rookit in Securom which is what I assume your trying to say, all security software knows that which is why no anti-virus/malware/rootkit software will remove Securom because for the 1000th time its not a rootkit.

Steam is DRM, if you dislike Microsoft so much then why are you using a Microsoft operating system to play computer games designed for Microsoft Windows, go buy an Apple Mac if you truly are that paranoid.

As for the GFW Marketplace I'm willing to bet it will be PC gamings saviour fact of the matter is Steam will never have the reach GFW will once a link to it is added to future Windows operating systems and as for Impulse that's a few steps further down the ladder in mind share so that will go nowhere.

Yes, but this is Microsoft we're talking about, here.

If they forced this upon us gamers, then we'd all better be prepared. After all, it's likely to come with some anti-piracy rootkit solution that'll allow just about every hacker under the sun to exploit it. Say goodbye to privacy!

I often read Secunia with genuine trepidation, one never knows what new and inventive ways MS has found to make one innately vulnerable to the nasties of the Internet, and moreso than any other company out there.

So... a Microsoft replacement for Steam? They can stuff that. I'm not the greatest fan of Steam (I prefer Impulse), but it'll likely be a good deal more sane and safe than what MS has in store.
