Speaking to Edge, Splash Damage founder Paul Wedgwood has claimed the Halo 3’s online play is an antiquated beast, and that depth is lacking from console gaming in general.
“Arguably, and this is not to dismiss what people have achieved in the past, but Halo 3 multiplayer is really Quake 3 from 1999,” he said.
“Even Call of Duty 4 is just Counter-Strike on the PC from 2001.”
Wedgwood claimed that deep shooters and strategy games had never successfully been published on consoles at all.
“There’s an amazing amount of depth that could be present on consoles, but it isn’t there because real-time strategy games have never been successful on consoles, deep first-person shooters have never been on the consoles, and so on,” he added.
Wedgwood’s currently working on a yet-to-be-announced Bethesda project.
Thanks, StrategyInformer.

Depends on what elements he’s talking about really, CoD4’s weapons work nothing like those in CS, though its true that in spirit, they are the same type of game… As for Halo… Well, Quake 3 had more interesting weapons, but apart from that, spot on really…

I just loved those epic Warthog fights in Quake 3!

I’d put a large amount of cash on the fact that whatever new game he’s working on will have some “revolutionary / deep” multiplayer feature…

I just hope it’s better than Quake Wars because that’s just Battlefield without the fun.
Or decent vehicles.

Infection was cool in TimeSplitters.
Funny that he says “deep first-person shooters have never been on the consoles”, you would think that a guy from Bethesda might keep that to himself so close after the release of Fallout 3.

You can say ‘Game X is just game Y from year Z’ for just about every game in the world.
Virtua Tennis is just Pong from 1972
Tekken 6 is just International Karate from 1986
Gears of War 2 is just Turrican from 1990
Etc, etc etc…

So you’re agreeing with him then Gigaloo?

All i know, is that Tresspasser isn’t on consoles, and therefore he is right…
Man I would love a next gen tresspasser sequel.
I went into an abandoned house, hopped across a gap on the second floor where the ceiling had collapsed, to find a huge shotgun, and thought to myself, wouldn’t it be awesome if it had destructible environments or next gen parallaxed bullet holes.
I raised up the shotgun and shot the damn wall down.
And this was released in 1998… Can you believe that!? The dinosaurs in that game, had technology similar to Euphoria controlling them, instead of animations.
And it’s taken THIS damn long to even slightl implement these concepts, with Red Faction: Guerilla comign and Euphoria in 2 games.
He is right…

God damn, just did a tiny bit of seraching and Seamus Blackley directed it! The Guy who helped the original Xbox and everything.
Woweee.
And now he’s on the Creative Art Agency representing games…
That man… He’s good. Real good.

Not really Shats.
Just that what he’s said is so ambiguous that there is an obvious degree of truth in it.
A teeny tiny miniscule amount of truth, but not enough for there to be any point in him saying it.
From one angle, you can’t argue with him, but his point is worthless.
Shatner said:
What he said was quite specific, gigglygooglywoogly.
DrDamn said:
On the same sort of subject Playr were claiming Gears 2 is very much a spiritual successor to Doom (proper Doom not that Doom 3 bollocks) – it’s not a bad call to be honest.
G1GAHURTZ said:
Yeah Shatney Watney, but it’s one of those statements that you can easily find ambiguity in.
For example, if you said to him:
‘Don’t be such an idiot. You’re just trying to hype your stupid game that nobody cares about and raise your non-existant profile at the same time. COD4 is nothing like CS. Where is the Free For All mode in CS? Where is the ranking system? the prestige levels? The campaign? The air strikes? The choppers? The Cage matches? The Hardcore modes? etc, etc, etc, etc, etc…?’
He’d just come out with some dribble like: ‘No, I wasn’t being specific! All of those things are just minor tweaks! They are insignificant bells and whistles, but the core gameplay remains the same! It’s still just a bunch of people online, playing round after round, shooting each other with weapons that they unlocked from the revious round. The core gameplay hasn’t changed!!’
It’s what he means when he uses the word “just” that is ambiguous.
Sure, COD4 is an FPS and CS is an FPS, so to a casual gamer, and to him too obviously, they are “just” the same game when it comes to the core mechanic.
But if you challenged him on this I think he’d squirm around what he meant by the word “just”.

Space Giraffe is it’s own genre. It is inimitable and unique in every possible way. If anything there’s more parrallels to draw with Andrew Braybrook’s lesser known Intensity than any other game.
Don’t mess. Got it? Good.

Absolute bullshit. The PC is changing, and it’s funny to see those most attached to the PC of yesteryear making ever more out of touch comments about it.

I love splash damage but I don’t think they are really in the position to start taking PR in this direction. Quake Wars was a great game if a little hardcore but it had many problems that the games he is gunning for just don’t have.

You all fail since not one of you has played or ackowledged Tresspasser, and even if you’re a mummy’s boy, let me tell you, it’s better than your mother.
Yes, you should prefer to have never existed than Tresspasser not existing.

I beat you No_PUDding, I’ve got the goddamn post-mortem stuff from Trespasser. So there!

Post Mortem stuff?
I read one on Gamsutra, but you got a print copy or something?
You bastard!!!! MIEN!
I fancy playing it now actually. Wish they made an HD version that was free roaming.

This book is great. Covers some amazing successes (Black and White, Deus Ex and more) and some flops. Enlightening stuff and well worth reading if you want to get a feel for day-to-day game development issues. Obviously, it squeezes multi-year projects into a few pages, but it’s good stuff either way.
It has the Trespasser post-mortem in it and many others – taken from the regular post-mortem articles from the Game Developer website. Its likely that if you read the Trespasser post-mortem on the site, the book’s rendition will be identical.
Makes the perfect Xmas gift!
