Apple: PSP and DS are in the past
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPod and iPhone product marketing, reckons Sony and Nintendo are stuck in the mud with their gaming handhelds. Apple’s got them on the ropes, apparently.
“There are already so many games [for the iPhone and iPod Touch], and as we look at it, to us, it really seems this is the future of gameplay. Whereas a lot of these devices [Nintendo DS and Sony PSP] are more in the past,” he said in this interview with T3.
“The computer power and the 3D graphic power here is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up DS]. So, this allows people to do significantly higher quality games.”
There you go, Nintendo. You’ve been beaten by “computer power.”

I am kind of undecided about this outside of the PR fluff.
I agree phone-come-gaming device is the future, and it will be a LOT harder to chnage the DS or PSP to a phone, BUT they also have considerable more power and install base, and getting worthwhile third party support might be a challenge.
I can imagine Apple swooping into the console market/media hub market and stealing the show based on what Nintendid.

I have an iPod touch, and whilst there’s some decent games for it, nothing I’ve played is in the same league as PSP or DS, and given the deeply limited controls present on the iPod, I can’t see that changing much. The three can definitely co-exist, but I dare say Sony have already got iPhone firmly in their sites with the inevitable PSPhone.

Where Apple are streets ahead is content delivery and pricing. So easy to peruse and buy the stuff. I’ve got loads of good stuff on my phone and it’s sensibly priced because retailers are taken out of the picture. For example – collection of puzzle games Puzzle Maniak – 10 great puzzle games each with a stack of options, no fluff or nonsense to pump up the price to a “standard” level. £2.99. It’s great. If the same thing were done on the DS it would £20-£30 and not actually offer anything more of value.

No way can the iPhone replace the PSP or DS because as Robo said it has very limited controls. Just imagine trying to play a beat’em up or a game like God of War, it could never work on the iPhone.
I’ve seen people post youtube videos Street Fighter on a GBA emulator on the iPhone and the controls are on the screen laid on top of action happening on the screen…..not the most conventional method.

A lot of the DS catalog could be done reasonably well I’d say. You are thinking of “games” in too narrow a field. The iPhone also has the advantage of a usable keyboard – in fact I’m writing this post on one now

The iphone doesn’t even have face buttons. All the games involve moving the thing around like a sixaxis.
Plus, we all know apple fail at games.

Yeah, fair to add that the app store and pricing is superb? I’ve bought far more games than I ever would have done because of it, and the user reviews and recommended sections are excellent guides. I do hope the competition is paying attention on that note.

How about gaming-come-phone devices? A PSP with a good phone inside is possibly the only portable device I’d ever need.
