Capps: “We really need to make strides against the secondhand market”
Epic boss Mike Capps has told GI that secondhand game sales are a “huge” issue in the US, and he believes the American development industry will start making moves to combat it.
“I think DLC will be increasing in scope just because in the US we really need to make strides against the second-hand market,” he said.
Capps said that models involving restricting content to those who bought the retail product new are being mooted.
“The secondary market is a huge issue in the United States. Our primary retailer makes the majority of its money off of secondary sales, and so you’re starting to see games taking proactive steps toward that by… if you buy the retail version you get the unlock code,” he said.
“I’ve talked to some developers who are saying ‘If you want to fight the final boss you go online and pay USD 20, but if you bought the retail version you got it for free’. We don’t make any money when someone rents it, and we don’t make any money when someone buys it used – way more than twice as many people played Gears than bought it.”
More through there.

Airdom… agreed. Vastly agreed. I think I’ll crank up some Motorhead instead.
I’m ruling out everything Shatner says. He doesnt think people should be able to sell their used copies of games. Bring up “I make $20 or LESS on a game I paid $60 for” and he flips out.
Car companies do not get money off sales of used cars.
Comic bok companies DO NOT get money from sales of old comic books. A copy of Action Comics #1 sold at auction for a or 7 figure sum nets DC no money. But they aren’t claiming that they deserve any of it, either.
No one is ranting about sales of used music CDs or DVDs either(but give it time, the MPAA and RIAA are greed-driven and should follow suit shortly)
Video games should be NO different.
This is industry greed, plain and simple. They aren’t content with current sales so they blame the consumer. If Caps wants to mak emoney of used copies of his games, then maybe he- and the other developers- should set up systems to BUY BACK copies directly and SELL THEM directly. They would profit off used game sales. But it’s effort and they’ll stick to the easier method of “blame people”.
There will be NO regulation passed and NO ability to ban used sales, especially personal sales.
So, Shitner, what about games that are 10-15 years old? Ban sales of those, too? Maybe block people from selling their old Sega Genesis cartridges?
Vince Desi and RWS have been around since the mid-80s, under a different name. They made the old Spy vs Spy game, for one, not counting numerous other NES and SNES games. They broke off from console gaming and changed their name when they decided to make Postal. So don’t act as if Desi is some industry newbie. He’s been around longer in the game industry than Mike Capps, that’s for damn certain(Wikipeda shows Capps didn’t enter the game industry until his work on America’s Army… I believe that was made quite some time after the NES was on the market).
You act like one developer doesn’t count. So… many? Really? I see Mike Capps saying this, where are all the other companies that he claims support him? He willing to name them? They willing to say the same thing and back him? As it is, this is Mike Capps saying something and Vince Desi telling him off. No one else involved. One on one.
LET THEM STEP FORWARD and join Capps if they support him, they shouldn’t be hiding as “the rest” who Caps claims support him. I’m guesisng he has maybe 1 or 2 other developer people on his side form companies no one’s heard of. Certainly not Valve, vertainly not Rockstar, certainly not iD Software, 3 companies that have always been friendly to their customers. So come on Capps, who supports your greed march?
Just. Shut. Up.

@Shatner
Your comment:
Warren,
As for the term “greedy developers”, I’ve never ever seen a greedy developer. If you think expecting 100% of the revenue you’re owed is “greedy” then why don’t you only take 50% of your salary and give the rest of your salary to charity (or better yet, to some scrote to spend on videogames)?
Expecting the money that’s rightfully yours is greedy!
Ripping off people who are owed money because you get a cheap game is doing them a favour!
Yes. That’s a well thought out appreciation of this situation!
————End ——————
Um, I DO PAY %50 of my salary, IF you want to call it that as I’m a struggling multimedia web designer – WHY? My college flooded the market with half @$$ designers so when I go in on interview, they love me, the interview ALWAYS lasts for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Talking going over my portfolio (which now is lame because I work a lame job – but again, it IS a job). And then they ask what college I attended and all of a sudden, then colorful, cheery personality calms down to a crawl and what was conversation turns into “Oh?” and “Uh-huh..” and the interviewer replies, “Yes we’ve hired and had a lot of interesting people come from that college.” in a monotone voice. Then the interview is over. I noticed with pattern AFTER my 8th interview with a good company. Now I just work doing bit and pieces of what I paid to be trained for to get paid. I make JUST enough money to buy ONE $60 game per 2 days (I have to buy gas and food. Don’t even include living expenses.
Therefore, your comment is too true.
But also when I said “greedy developer”, I WAS referring to YOU buying a Game and to complete the game YOU PAID $60 for, you HAVE get the DLC to complete the game. Please do not bend my words when it comes to greed. I’m not a greedy person, nor absolutely cheap. Though I’m happy with a BK Fish and a Small Cherry Icee from BK. But you need to understand how appalling what was said. If games retort to this at $60, I’ll just return to my retro collecting. Also, check out my friend’s: http://classicgamesrevisited.com/
“Don’t be greedy, use the trashbin for litter.”
Ciao amigo.
