Gears of War 2 launches worldwide
Gears of War 2 is launching as we type, ending a journey that started with Cliff Bleszinski walking onto the GDC stage in February with a plastic gun.
Midnight events have been taking place all over the States and Europe overnight, so keep watching for reports from the frontline. Here’s the first one, from a Gamestop in Connecticut. Men, queues, hoods: it’s like the good old days relived.
Bleszinski himself is at the LA launch, which is happening right now.
We couldn’t get to the London event last night because Mike lives in Denmark, Nathan lives in Texas and Pat’s wife is so full of babies she may actually explode soon.
Good luck with the game, Epic. We’ll bring you more pictures of men in queues as they happen.

But will it beat LittleBigPlanet to number 1? Hmm?

Err, yeah. It will. Comfortably, even, I’d wager.

I reckon 50% of morriss’ statement will prove unequivocally true.
And which ever of the two games comes in second place will be “due to stock shortages as a result of unprecedented demand” or something.

Theoretically, Gears should do it. But LBP has two days extra sales because it launched on a Wednesday. But then again they completely fluffed the launch, so people might not even realise it’s out.
Could go either way. Whichever, Tuesday is officially going to be ‘braying fanboy apocalypse’.

Anything which stops the terminally ongoing “Wii non-games lol / Wii pwns you” forum comments death spiral has to be a good thing.

Maybe, just maybe, if we all hold hands, the Wii non games lol comments will stop the Wii non games.

Gears will be number one by a large margin. It’s a shame about LBP, my copy turned up Wednesday just as I was trying to finish Fable 2 in time for Gears which turned up yesterday…so it’s still lying there unopened

So, what can we learn if GEARS OF SNORE (just for you SWiSS BOSS) beats LBP?
Gamers would rather destroy than create.

Surely it’s just that early adopters are more likely to fall into the “men with guns” cat? Rather than the “little cloth men” cat, obv.

Which it will.
I like to destroy rather than create too (well, if it’s with a hackneyed, laboured, creation system anyway).

It’d be nice to think that LittleLatentlyHomosexualPlanet will hit the top spot (even though I personally prefer Gears) because it would prove that originality and innovation still have a place in the current climate. But Gears 1.8 will almost certainly be number one by quite a distance, I fancy. [/Motty]
Out of interest, has anyone seen any LBP ads on the telly? I haven’t. Loads of print ones, but nothing during Corrie or owt.

Morriss, I don’t think you know the meaning of the word “hackneyed”.

I do. But I used it wrongly, you’re right. It means overused.

It can also mean banal, however. So it’s kind of right.

Gears 2 will obviously sell more, because of the simple fact that the 360 has a much bigger install base than the PS3.
Even if a higher percentage of PS3 owners bought LBP than the percentage of 360 owners buying Gears 2, it doesn’t guarantee that LBP will have sold more.
Which is precisely the reason that so many PS3 exclusives are continually ending up on 360.

I was specifically talking about the UK, by the way. Obviously it’ll cane it in the US.

Which of the two will further gaming as an artform though? That is the kernel of the poodle.

Good point HoC,
If an unoriginal (but graphically pretty, shiny shiny) sequel game beats an original, innovative game then I’d say all those whingeing crybaby gamers who mope about the internet full of “Oh woe is us for we are constantly denied NEW FUN because evil corporations wish to suck our wallets dry with HACKNEYED shooter sequels and macho, personality free protagonists, why can’t we be offered exciting and compelling deviations for our hobby instead? Woe! Woe! WOE!” and other pious claptrap – such types can shut their dirty cakeholes and start to appreciate their accountability for such direction. Hypocrites!
Also: games writer not good with the words. Ahaha. Takes me back to that “Lara model doesn’t know archeology” article in a blur of comparative irony.
FYI this weekend I shall be playing neither Gears of Bore 2 nor LittleBigPlanet. I really MUST get to the end of the new DS Castlevania (it’s very good!).

People don’t know what they want though, Shat. They’re forever crying out for stuff that’s new and different and original and then when something arrives they go and buy Manly Shooting Fest 6 instead because the new thing “looks a bit weird” and they “might not like it”.
Gamers say they want change, but they also fear change. There’s little wonder that publishers also fear change.

“Which of the two will further gaming as an artform though? ”
Does it matter?
Is gaming as an artform really that important considering the poor sales of titles such as Okami and Ico?

More games need to be like Shadow of the Colossus, which was both arty AND had big, stompy monsters that you had to kill with a pointy sword. It’s one of very few games I can think of that can essentially be called ‘emotional hardcore’.

Actually, there’s a boss I just beat in the new Castlevania DS game that, being about 4 screens big and that you have to manipulate him so that you can climb on him to attack him properly, was rather reminiscent of the majestic SotC. Awesome bosses in this new Castlevania. Loving it.

He’s in Dracula’s castle – map completion about 75%. There’s a really cool’ly thought up ‘shadow’ boss before that which hits for MASSIVE DAMAGE before you’ll meet the one I’m thinking of though.
The boss design is superb. Every boss I encounter it’s like “Oh shit, I’ll NEVER beat him, it’s just too tough and he hits too hard” but then you start to pick up on the patterns, mix and match your glyphs (sickle and luminos work well when you do their combined attack) and they fall to your womanly might soon enough.
I’ve just encountered series regular “Grim Reaper” boss so I know the final battle can’t be too far away.
Are you in Dracula’s castle yet? You need to find all the trapped villagers before you can see it on your map.

Going back to the original few posts… I think you’ve got far more faith in the average gamer than I have if you reckon LBP will beat Gears. They’re both great games but homoerotic muscleman shooters win every time in sales contests.

Oh, come on, both games are clearly based on the unspoken love between Marcus and Dom. The massive shoulders, the constant masculine grunts, the ‘touching’ moments where Marcus comforts his pal, the unfeasibly large penis-guns.
Gay as an otter’s wedding.

I can think of nothing homoerotic about massively oversized, brutish men in close, intense situations with each other. Nothing. At all.

LOL.
Powerful body =/= homosexuality.
It’s people who are ashamed of their either too skinny or way overweight bodies that come up with this nonsense.
And I’m not just saying that because I spend a large amount of my spare time body building either!
