IGN batters Wii version of Quantum of Solace

quantumofsolace8.jpg

Whoops. IGN’s hammered the Wii version of Quantum of Solace, saying it has “one of the lousiest framerates” seen in a Wii gameand that, “It’s clear from the moment you start playing that the Wii version of Quantum of Solace was never — not even for a second — a priority.”

Summing up:

What a disappointment. While Quantum of Solace houses some fun concepts, including a competent cover system, the entire experience is marred by a medley of technical failures — not shortcomings, but total missteps. The game chugs along with one of the lousiest framerates I have ever witnessed — I’m not exaggerating when I write that at certain points the fluidity halts to an unplayable slideshow. There’s graphical glitches — pop-up, geometry drops, and more at every turn. And Treyarch chose to ignore the control innovations made in games like Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Metroid Prime 3 and most recently The Conduit for a sluggish crosshair that seems inspired by the configuration in Red Steel. I just don’t get it. It’s clear from the moment you start playing that the Wii version of Quantum of Solace was never — not even for a second — a priority. Absolutely do not support software of this low quality.

It’s 4.5/10, apparently. There’s a video full of choppy framerate sections after the break.

Mmm… cashgrab.

This game is a perfect example of why people don’t want Treyarch touching the COD series any more.

The Wii seems to come with a built in excuse for developers to do a poor job. The better games on the system prove its more than capable of nice looking graphics at a decent framerate (as does GC software).

The screenies that someone linked to the EG thread a few days back were awful. I know people keep saying they want Goldeneye back, but I think most of them would prefer it if it didn’t have the same graphics. :-D

I agree, JP. It’s mostly just a cash-in, and usually a multi-platform release that includes the Wii tends to scrape whatever’s left at the bottom of the barrel once human assets have been aligned for the XBox and then the PS3.

One fine example of this is “The Force Unleashed”.

And Blerk, I’m not sure I agree. It’s not graphics that get old, it’s ideas. For example, I think Ultima VII has aged better than Baldur’s Gate. Ultima was always primitive graphically, but the ideas involved were way ahead of their time.

And when talking about first-person shmups, the same is true there, too. If the ideas in shmups are decent, then the games remain interesting to play. I still bring out Duke Nukem 3D for the occasional romp around in, and an FPS-based LAN party really doesn’t feel complete without an outing through one or two of the Duke’s maps, it’s a quintessential addition, for overall fun at least.

Unfortunately, I never played Golden Eye so I don’t know how well the ideas within the game have aged. But if the ideas are still solid (and weren’t just novelty that was heralded as innovation at the time, and I’ve seen a lot of that) and enjoyable, then the game probably still has a fanbase that play it today.

For me, Nethack (and more recently, Dwarf Fortress) was always complete proof that advanced ideas were all that was really needed for a game. Graphics help, but even basic graphics can make a brilliant game (World of Goo, et al, which could likely have been achieved six years or more ago).

Multiplatform game gets low score for half-arsed Wii version NON-SHOCKER!

Not even remotely newsworthy.

Perhaps making a fuss will discourage it. Are you suggesting we accept it?

It does look pretty shocking, doesn’t it. Lest we forget that even the gamecube could impress visually at times (Resi 4!) The cashgrab, lowest common denominator attitude of Wii development is why I sold mine long ago.

Not at all. Doesn’t the review do the discouragement on its own, though?

But, the point of this article is to publicise and promote the review to those who might otherwise miss it, increasing the level of discouraging media coverage.

The Wii version didn’t do to well thank god. Wasn’t even in the top 40.
