Sony: Devs will lead on PS3, remove functionality for weaker processors

Speaking with Videogamer, Sony UK boss Ray Maguire has said that due to PlayStation 3’s ever-increasing install base, it now seems logical that developers will lead on PS3 and downgrade games to tailor for consoles with weaker processors.

“I think we now have an install base which is big enough for any third party to want to develop for,” said Maguire.

“Now the decision making part of development is which do you lead your development on? Is it easier to lead with the most powerful, both in terms of AI and graphics, i.e. PS3 and then just remove part of the functionality for the processors that aren’t quite as strong?

“I would imagine that’s very much part of the thought process now from a studio development point of view.”

You lead your development on PC, Ray. All console games do.

Its more logical to lead with the least powerful. Like in the PS2 days. Why write code that only works well on one platform?

As I understand it though, the 360 deals quite well with PS3 style code but not the other way around so it might make sense to lead with PS3 for that reason. The 360 being more flexible.

morriss, is that you? You look a lot like Robert DeNiro.

JP - agreed. A lot of developers are leading on PS3 but not for the reasons stated by the man from Sony.

What an incredible line of BS platform manufacturers spout. Does Maguire really still believe that we don’t know how poor (in comparison) the PS3 GPU is?

  5. Blerk said:

They’ve been saying this for years, but I still don’t see much evidence of it actually happening. Projects which lead on the PS3 still appear to be the exception rather than the rule.

    Harry, who is “we”?

  7. Harry said:

Well obviously not “you”, you’re too special to be lumped with the hoi-poloi. :)

Not a very satisfactory answer. C’mon, I want to know who it is you’re speaking on behalf of!

Lol, oh dear. I thought they’d learned to stop this bollocks by now. Someone should tell Bethseda seeing as they seemed to have taken an engine that was working very nicely on the PS3 and downgraded it for Fallout 3.

Blerk, EA and Ubisoft are leading the ‘future’ Maguire talks about.

But in his future I expect the Ps3 is selling Wii numbers.

And Deftangel, that’s just bad. Who knows what happned there, since the PS3 version of Oblivion looked better than Fallout 3.

LOL, I almost laughed my head off on this one, “downgrade” on other platforms, lol. Yeah Right.

On the subject… EG have released their latest face off today: http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=282241

Well, that went well for the “machine with the strongest processor”. Again.

  15. No_PUDding said:

As much as I totally agree the PS3 versions of mutliplatform games are most often poorer, Eurogamer will never totally have my trust (I am sure it doesn’t want it anyway).

    They have their persuasions.

  16. morriss said:

    lol. Don’t be stupid.

  17. Gekidami said:

What are you taking about PUD? I’m sure they had a perfect reason for only actually reviewing the 360 versions of nearly all those games…

  18. No_PUDding said:

    Sorry…

    Too late morriss.

  19. Psychotext said:

They know people don’t trust them No_PUD… which is why they have a pro (as in, non EG :P ) do the testing.
