New XNA tech demo – The Unfinished Swan

unfinishedswan1.jpg

After the break. Now this is more like it. Watch the rather intriguing tech demo whose premise is that you need to navigate your way through an all-white maze by splattering black paint everywhere, revealling the obstacles that stand in your path.

Anyway, enough talking, more watching. Thanks RPS for the head’s up.

Inventive! That’s really neat. Sound effects need some work.

Very cool … dare I suggest it would work better on a Wii :) .

For some reason, Blerk. I thought of you when I posted that. :)

You secretly want to spatter me with your liquids?

Well, it’s not a secret any more is it?

The XNA stuff seems to have gone under the radar a bit. Everyone’s talking about the NXE and Netflix and PrimeTime, but the community games stuff launches the same day and is potentially infinitely more exciting than streaming videos or online quiz shows.

Fantastic idea!
Cool and arty like “Linger in Shadows”!
A must have for me.

Still, it’s not quite overly engineered blood spatter.

Linger in Shadows was rubbish.

The atmosphere of this game reminds me Portal a bit: claustrophobic and eerie. I like the Don’t Be Afraid written on the floor.

No, “Linger in Shadows” was great!
Totally worth the €3 I spent!

Remember, it’s not a game! So don’t judge it like a game.

It was neither rubbish nor great. It was good enough for what it is.

Linger in shadow was fantastic. Somenthing new , original and artistic . It would be great to have more .

What’s that? morris disimissing something on the PS3 outright? No sign of adequate reasoning or substantiation?

By your own credo, morriss, your comment has no merit!

What are the odds that the closest morriss has got to Linger In The Shadows is some scratchy YouTube vid? :D

As for this, I liked it a lot as a concept. Not sure if it’s got the mileage for a full game. I’d like to see what could be done if, rather than paint splats, you had sound-waves bouncing off the solid objects (the way bats navigate at night). It’d be interesting to see what could be done with a game that puts the player in the spot of being completely blind. And, in that regard, sound design (and even rumble usage) could make a considerable difference.

I think someone found out how to decals and went to town. I’d like to know what the game will be.

Oh, I think it’s a little more than decals – they’re clearly not set decals mapped abitrarily onto a surface as the splatter seems to have far too much in common with the original object. Maybe they’re very convincing decals? Dunno. The programmer clearly has texture memory to spare ;)

Nice concept but definitely liking Shatners take on it I would play a game like that.

Fancy texture-projection pixel shader, I’d assume then. Which is pretty much just clever decals, right? ;-)

(I don’t do much graphics programming, to be honest).

This tech could power the ‘Jenna Loves Daredevil’ game I’ve always dreamed of!

I’ve got Linger in Shadows. PSN ID is morriss, if you want to compare trophies. :)

Its an interesting idea the video. Not too sure how well it would it work as a gameplay mechanic.

Better yet. Take that idea and get Jeff Minter to realise it.

Oh yeah! Giggity giggity gig-i-ty!

Erk! No. I love Jeff, he’s a smashing bloke. But.. no. My eyes are too old for his stuff now. I’ve grown to appreciate minimalism.
