OXM gives Fallout 3 10/10

fallout3a1.jpg

As you can see on MaxConsole, the US OXM has given Fallout 3 a 10/10 review score, saying the game essentially delivers on every count.

There’s an image of the final page of the review through there, which concludes:

“Between its engrossing story, ginormous world, well-crafted RPG side and white-knuckle FPS combat, Fallout 3 completely, utterly gives you your $60 worth.”

Bargain. Take a look. Game’s out at the end of the month,

I’ve seen a number of good reviews for this… so why do I still think that it’s going to be shit?

Nothing I’ve seen in the vids makes it look like anything more than an average FPS.

  2. McLovin85 said:

I haven’t really seen many vids but from memory Oblivion on my PS3 was quite ‘laggy’ to play so i’m hoping Fallout will have been optimised well enough for the huge worlds to stream effectively.

Psycho, This is Bethesda, not SCE. Was Oblivion was JUST another RPG?

    @ Psychotext
Maybe it’s all about what we haven’t seen so fare …
… but I do understand your sceptics. I have quite similar feelings toward this game although “shit” is a bit harsh.
Do you like RPGs in general?

  5. I was always gonna get Fallout 3.

But now, with this score and the fact it’s now coming out the same day as LBP in the UK, it’s only a confirmation.

I’m a big RPG fan… the problem is that this looks more like an FPS to me (currently sick of FPS). Doesn’t help that I was an absolutely HUGE fan of the first two, and I hated Oblivion. It’s a bunch of factors that add up to me being particularly harsh with this title. I actually had it on pre-order for months but as soon as I started seeing that the in-game stuff shown was FPS style I cancelled it.

Last thing I saw on it was this:

Which looks godawful to me. I realise I’m probably not giving it a chance… but footage like that isn’t helping me to.

So many 10/10 games this year. I remember when they used to be special….

  8. Esha said:

Oblivion was pretty much just another average RPG when it was released, yes. It was only a dedicated stable of modders who made it special, the writing was average at best and fairly dull, the original game was buggy, and the quests only rarely showed true brilliance (one or two of the short quests, such as the artist, the mad Daedra bloke, and some of the Dark Brotherhood stuff, for example).

Now, only with a firm stable of mods available and two expansion packs (Knights of the Nine and the Shivering Isles) has it actually become anything decent. But it’s still ludicrously buggy without the unofficial fix mod.

It makes me sad that Mask of the Betrayer was largely overlooked and Oblivion was so hyped, and I do fear that what makes an RPG truly great (Planescape great) has been forgotten.

Fallout seems to be an FPS version of Oblivion, truth be told. That can be good, but I fear it’s going to be shit for a long while for two reasons:

    1. There’ll be no development kit for modders, they’re likely going to have to build everything themselves. This means that mods will be a long time coming, if ever.

    2. Building on the above point: There’s going to be a huge amount of buggyness, it’s inevitable. It’s a Bethesda game. I’m sorry if that offends anyone, but speaking earnestly they built that reputation by themselves. The cure for this is usually an unofficial patches mod, but because of point 1, this is unlikely to happen.

Bethesda is convinced that their games can stand on their own without any modder intervention, and to be honest… I don’t see that, I think they’re in for a bit of a fall.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Fallout 3 will be shit, it’ll just be a bit shit because the bugs will make it so annoying, and the game overall will be rather average. It won’t be a bad game, but I think that if we get our expectations too high here we’ll be disappointed.

The trailers made it obvious to me that it’s very much just Oblivion with guns. Many of the old Oblivion mechanics are quite obviously still in place (such as the super-bloom, people talking about supposedly private topics in an open bar room with loads of NPCs about, zooming right in on someone’s face when one talks to them, et cetera), so it likely hasn’t changed all that much. Well, besides the setting, of course.

So I know what I’m expecting, and I hope the rest of you won’t be too disappointed.

Imagine if turns out to be rather good how massively disappointed the hardcore NMA Fallout fanboys would be. It would be so funny to see those nerdiest of nerds be completely heartbroken because Fallout 3 is actually brilliant. They would be crying and wanking for years.
Of course, it all depends on whether Fallout 3 is actually good or not. An OXM review says nothing, official reviews are never to be trusted. Looking forward to the game, I hope I won’t be the one that’s disappointed :)

  10. m3nAc3 said:

I just don’t believe this kind of 10/10 reviews…, especially with this kind of game… It’s obvious it can go two ways… My hope was it would be a good game, but certainly not a perfect one as this review is suggesting.
I think the game will be crap (for true fallout fans as I am), but I pretty sure too that it will be a financial success… So we can expect much more of raping this once brilliant fallout series…

I never played the old FallOut games, so i probaly wont feel the ‘lore-cruch’ factor, from what i’ve seen the game looks good and i’ve already got the CE pre-ordered for next week.

  12. rainer said:

I think Fallout 3 will be a decent RPG but not quite up to the standards & insane level of detail the original Fallouts were.

There have already been a few semi-negative reviews from Euro magazines so if your a fallout fan I would take any 10/10 score with a pinch of salt. To those that are new to gaming & probably never even played the originals (even press types too) especially on the consoles I could see why they think F3 might be the best thing since sliced bread.

The Fallout 3 blog tracks most stuff including reviews outside of the big press sites.

  13. Quiiick said:

Yes, me too, never played the old FallOut games, so my disappointment will be moderate I guess. Although if FO3 turns out to be full of bugs, I will get angry. There’s nothing more annoying than buggy software. This (plus the unbearable german translation) kept me from buying Oblivion.

Let’s hope FO3 will at least have decent language localisations.

  14. Gekidami said:

Indeed, lets hope we dont get 4 people to voice a million like with Oblivion, Captain Picard was just phoning it in…

  15. Quiiick said:

Than there’s the problem of not getting a uncut version of FallOut 3 if you live outside of the US or UK.

Poor old germans will definitely get a cut version of the game as usual.

But AFAIK its’ still unclear if other german speaking nations like Austria and Switzerland will get the completely uncut version (albeit no real world drug-names) or something between the german full-cut and the uncut version. Bethesda please make up your mind!

  16. Psychotext said:

NMA not being won over by the game is actually part of the problem here. They were responsible for a massive amount of modding / patching work (1000s of changes) for the first two games and they would have been the people to bring Fallout 3 more in line with the other Fallout games.

Smartypants: Thing is, even if the game gets 10s all round it wouldn’t really make much difference to the NMA crowd. It can be a good game without technically being a good Fallout game.

  17. reask said:

    That’s some score.

Problem with scores like that is you can expect too much and be disappointed.

Still I will probably get it as it has a bit of both FPS and RPG.

  18. absolutezero said:

Most of the NMA hardcore have pirated it because they were never going to pay for it anyway. They hate it.

Ive watched a fair bit of streaming and all those videos on the marketplace and nothing has made me thinking its even slightly interesting. It still has the terrifying crash zooms on weird faces and stilted conversations. Using normal FPS controls seem to be entirely pointless as VATS can kill things in a couple of clicks with no effort from you on the other end. The endless, grey, skyless environment is almost the exact opposite of Oblivion aswell. I dunno maybe im just looking at things the wrong way and it is actually fantastic but everything Ive seen makes it look like a total mess.

Then theres the clamp down on mods for the PC version, which was what made Oblivion actually playable.

  19. Psychotext said:

They’re clamping down on mods?!? Where did you get that info from?

  20. absolutezero said:

NMA, hang on ill go find out where I read about it.

I think Beth were a little scared at the amount of major game changing mods that appeared for Oblivion.

  21. absolutezero said:

“However, the last press releases from Bethesda have quoted the developers as saying there are NO current plans for releasing an editor with the game.”

    No editor = no mods.

THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW CHASE

  25. David said:

I’m not really bothered about no mods. I never used them in oblivion since most of it was complete crap.

  26. absolutezero said:

Yes most of Oblivion was complete crap, the mods helped fix alot of it though.

  27. Smartypants said:

That’s the thing: I never bothered with mods in Oblivion because it was crap anyway. I couldn’t care less that some mod or other made good improvements.
I loved Morrowind however, I played that game to death. Because I enjoyed it so much, I also checked out some mods to freshen up the gameplay experience a bit after years and years of playing. I enjoyed the mods in Morrowind, but if the game is crap in the first place, I won’t bother with it no matter how many mods there are.
So, like David, I couldn’t care less if the modders have to work harder and we have to wait longer for some mods to appear for Fallout 3. I want the game to be good, that’s all I care about.
