Bionic Commando is “not fucking Spider-Man,” says GRIN

Wednesday, 15th October 2008 06:48 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Speaking to Kotaku, GRIN chap Ulf Andersson has explained the reasoning behind not making Bionic Commando’s swing mechanic an automatic affair, claiming the decision to make you press a button to latch on is all about “focus.”

“It’s not fucking Spider-Man,” he said. “We made a swing mechanism that’s not automatic.

“This means you have to focus a bit more, because it’s a proper mechanic instead of just a button press; it’s the core mechanic of the game. Everything in the game is built around that, from the environments to the enemy.”

Andersson added: “It’s really hard to do a good swing mechanic. Not many games have got it right. But we’re all really proud of ours.

“The original Bionic Commando was skill-based. There was a risk in jumping: you might die, you might not. We’ve stayed true to that core mood and feeling of the original in our game.”

Game’s out early next year. More through the link.

If their efforts are as good as they were in Bionic Commando: Rearmed, we’re in for a treat. This is another game I’m particularly looking forward to, I have to say.

And it seems as cornball as the original, too. I couldn’t help but giggle in one of the trailers where a bunch of guys hop out of a helicopter and arrogantly declare that they’ve established a beach-head, just by being there.

I’m really hoping that humour continues to pervade the rest of the game.

As for the swing mechanism, I can understand what they mean by that. In pretty much every Spider-Man game, it’s just been a matter of hitting a button at the right point to latch onto the next nearest “point”. I wonder what they’re doing though that works so much better and yet is so different… eager to see that.

Judging by the videos they’ve created a damn fine swing mechanic. Whoever is in control is pulling off some really cool shit and it doesn’t look like they are struggling with it at all. It uses an auto-lock on method, so when you look at an object that can be grappled a spinning icon appears over it.

You can even grapple enemies, pull yourself towards them and boot them off rooftops. You can do it in multiplayer too and you can see in the videos people getting booted off but using the grapple to save themselves, it looks really cool.
