I think GFK covers Europe, and Chart Track is a respective acquisition which covers the UK and Ireland within GFK. Are GFK and Chart Track different entities anymore? I’m not sure, but I think that Chart Track still only covers the UK and Ireland for the GFK group? (If that’s the case, that would imply that Chart Track numbers still only cover the UK and Ireland.)

It’s funny watching the calculations fly about here in an effort to understand Microsoft’s vague numbers. There have been a few good attempts though, and I salute those.

I don’t know though, with all the people apparently who claim they’re speaking entirely independently of Microsoft–going out of their way to stress this–and now these new numbers… am I the only one getting this aura of desperation from them?

Oh, and a quick calculation (correct me if I’m wrong).

If they sold 1,000 the week before this increase they would have sold 3,140 to get the 214%. If they’re now outselling the PS3 2:1 it would mean in the week of the increase the PS3 sold 1,570.

Unless they’re being tricky and counting the time scales differently.

Hmm. Percentages and ratios again – just like last time. It’s all rather reminscient of the sales/shipped semantic argument isn’t it?

The absence of actual unit numbers means that, as assertive as MS want to be, they’re opting to be ambiguous and non-specific.

Up 214% is such a nasty way of wording it. But if it’s otusellign PS3 2:1 then I’d say that it means it’s not UP 214% but it’s sales are 214% of what they were.

And this is a spike.

That’s hardly record breaking.

200% increase means it’s selling 3x as many.

Err.. so you’re right. Assuming the PS3 has been selling constantly.

So, a uplift of 214% and it sold twice as many units as the PS3. That would mean that until two weeks ago the PS3 outsold the X360
