360 sales up 214%, outselling PS3 2:1

Microsoft’s announced that sales of Xbox 360 have risen 214 percent in the past two weeks, and that the console is, according to the company, now outselling PS3 by 2:1.

The firm’s calculations come from Chart-Track figures.

“This data shows that the Xbox 360 trajectory continues upwards, and not just in the UK,” said Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis.

“We’ve seen uplift in all countries in Europe and are confident that even at this rate of growth we can keep retail satisfied with a steady supply of consoles throughout the Christmas season.

“Our commitment to continuously improving and innovating new content, our new high-profile marketing campaign and the fact that we’re now the best-value next-gen console on the market with an entry-level ERP of £129.99 combine to make Xbox 360 the right blend of gaming and wider experiences at the right price to offer unparalleled entertainment for everyone. And these figures prove it.”

The figure rise has come from a substantially price cut earlier this month.

So, a uplift of 214% and it sold twice as many units as the PS3. That would mean that until two weeks ago the PS3 outsold the X360

200% increase means it’s selling 3x as many.

Err.. so you’re right. Assuming the PS3 has been selling constantly.

I’m confused… is this a 214% increase in the UK or in Europe?

Charttrack is UK isn’t it?

Up 214% is such a nasty way of wording it. But if it’s otusellign PS3 2:1 then I’d say that it means it’s not UP 214% but it’s sales are 214% of what they were.

And this is a spike.

That’s hardly record breaking.

“The firm’s calculations come from Chart-Track figures”

Hmm. Percentages and ratios again – just like last time. It’s all rather reminscient of the sales/shipped semantic argument isn’t it?

The absence of actual unit numbers means that, as assertive as MS want to be, they’re opting to be ambiguous and non-specific.

My time with my DS dropped by over 80% last week whilst my time with my 360 doubled. Which console did I spend the most time with?

JPickford: Gfk Chart Track (the new company) covers the entire of Europe.

Shatner: We know exactly what they sold last year, so it’ll give you an idea what the percentages / ratios mean. (Which is much more than we usually know)

Oh, and a quick calculation (correct me if I’m wrong).

If they sold 1,000 the week before this increase they would have sold 3,140 to get the 214%. If they’re now outselling the PS3 2:1 it would mean in the week of the increase the PS3 sold 1,570.

Unless they’re being tricky and counting the time scales differently.

It’s funny watching the calculations fly about here in an effort to understand Microsoft’s vague numbers. There have been a few good attempts though, and I salute those.

I don’t know though, with all the people apparently who claim they’re speaking entirely independently of Microsoft–going out of their way to stress this–and now these new numbers… am I the only one getting this aura of desperation from them?

Smallest Dog barks loudest. Sony and Nintendo have been smugly quiet.

I think Chart Track covers both the UK and Ireland.

I think GFK covers Europe, and Chart Track is a respective acquisition which covers the UK and Ireland within GFK. Are GFK and Chart Track different entities anymore? I’m not sure, but I think that Chart Track still only covers the UK and Ireland for the GFK group? (If that’s the case, that would imply that Chart Track numbers still only cover the UK and Ireland.)

I love it when companies release figures which mean squat in real terms.

Oh.. did I say “love”? I meant “hate”.
