UK OPM gives LittleBigPlanet 10/10
According to this thread in the Euro PS boards, Britain’s Official PS Mag has given LittleBigPlanet 10/10.
Subs issues are hitting now, apparently. The game is the mag’s cover star this month.
Remember, if you buy the issue you’re going to get a free Kratos Sackboy, which is going to be hard to resist if you’re already queuing up to buy the Media Molecule title.
Game’s out at the end of October.

Yeah. That’s unsurprising.
I’d still be shocked if this doesn’t review stupidly well.

I think this’ll be solid 9s and 10s all round.

Its been hyped so much it can’t get anything but 10′s or 9′s. Saying that I never much liked GTA 4 and that got 10′s, I never much liked halo 3 and that got 10′s.
With high profile games like this I avoid reviewers at all costs because there just going to bum the hell out of it. I’ll know if I’ll like it or not when I get to play it.

Assassin’s Creed got hyped a lot and got 7 all around.
I expect this to get 9 and 10s though. No reviewer will play it long enough before publishing his or her review to notice a probable lag of longevity.

This’ll clean up, I reckon. The only places it won’t get full marks are percent scores and the ones who do graphics:9, playability 10 etc.

I’d be a little surprised at an Edge 10, to be honest. While the mag has championed it for a while, the platforming controls are just a little too loose to be entirely satisfying, no matter how good the creation aspect is.

I think MM have already said that the controls are a lot tighter for the final release. Edge could go either way. I don’t think it will be anything less than a 9, but a 10 would be quite something.
I know Edge were extremely enthusiastic about the main campaign, comparing it to the finest Mario has ever offered, so coupled with the possibilities of the creation tools, I think it could go all the way!

Did they really say that? I’ve not seen anything so far that can touch Galaxy’s genius, I have to say. The creation stuff is amazing, and it’s hugely charming, but I’m not sure I agree with that comparison.

Yeah, it was certainly something along those lines. Although they could have limited it to his 2d adventures.

They haven’t said anything like that as far as I know.

OK, I’m going to go and dig out the quote, bear with me…

OK then, the actual quote I’m referring to is in Edge 192, and reads:
“With fairly low expectations for this part of the game, it’s a revelation to come away with the sense that we’ve just played through some of the purest 2D design we’ve seen since Super Mario World.”
Also worth quoting an above passage too, which reads:
” – what we discovered, however, playing through an Indian-themed stage with Healy, was that even if this wasn’t a genre-shifting creative tool, it would still be a devastatingly effective 2D platformer out of the box.”
So it’s compared favourably to Mario, and it’s pretty clear they’re impressed by the single player campaign, although I’m happy to concede I didn’t quote them accurately in my initial post, but the vibe is clearly the same.

But everyone has waved their willy at this game since its conception. Only now do we know how it plays.

I don’t quite follow morriss. Are you dismissing Edge’s opinion on the basis that they were just sucked into the hype machine?
… and just for the record, I don’t personally see Edge as the gaming holy grail, it’s just their opinion carries more weight than most.

I’m not dismissing anything. I’m just saying the the media reporting that this game will be the Second Coming isn’t anything new. The controls being slightly unresponsive and clunky is.

The platform controls for the game are superb, I’m not sure what the problem is with them. Feels a lot like LostWinds to me (which is another game that cleaned up in reviews).

Yeah, it seems many people are divided on th issue. Some people feel it’s clunky, others think they’re fine.

Be great if they took that feedback in from the beta, and offered users some sort of calibration, as I’ve heard many mixed reports on the controls myself.

I think a lot of people expect their platformers to be quick and twitchy, like the 2D Marios and Sonics. LBP is slower and more floaty, but that’s okay too. I find the game a joy to play, and that’s based on the few story levels. I haven’t even attempted to make my own level.

I was just expecting Sackboy to do as my fingers were telling him at all times.

It’s the Official PlayStation Magazine. They’re even giving away free merchandising for the game with the issue, for christ sake.
It would have gotten 10/10 by the magazine even if it was completely shit, just because it’s a Sony game and Sony wants to champion it to the world as the second coming of gaming, simply because there isn’t much else on the format half decent enough to be worth promoting.
But at least this is a game worth some praise, instead of most of the shit coming out of Sony’s development groups lately.

He did with me mate. Controls are a joy to behold as far as I’m concerned, particularly grabbing on to stuff. For those that aren’t finding it as easy as I am, you probably will if you stick with it.

Controls are fine with me. Bit clumsy at first, but once I’d adjusted they were great. I could apply the previous sentence to pretty much any game that doesn’t have borked controls.

The controls are about as borked as the Halo controls.

People have a problem with the controls?
He is totally reponsive I don’t see or feel the problem. The only thing that I could see that’s been interpretted badly is the floatiness, but that’s intneional, and I want to jump high.

usb mouse and keyboard support for the level editor would be 800% more awesome than asteroid dinosaur attack

Damn… Well we can make asteroid Dinosaur attack levels, so clearly it’s about 1/8th of it’s potential as it is currently.
Damn MM!!

How do you really rate a content creation and playing tool. Basing it on the 80 pre-made levels alone isn’t enough.

Weird argument. Having played the first four levels, sunk myslef into content creation and experienced others, I am pretty sure that’s how you mark the tools.
But you can’t just disregard there’s an 8 hour game there also. And judging from the Beta the first four are amazing fun to play with people.

I mean, you can rate it as it comes but you can’t predict what experience you’ll get after a month or so of content creation.
The OPM review would have been submitted before the beta was out so they only have the provided content and their own content to go on. I see the public content being the bulk of the game experience a true evaluation can only be made after a while.
I don’t doubt OPM’s ability to predict how the game will work in the wild but it would be the most subjective part of the review.

Well, I guess you’d have to judge it on (a) its main game and (b) its creation side. It wouldn’t be fair to judge it on UGC for the obvious reasons you point out. It would be interesting to see a review of the state of the UGC after a couple of months. I’m sure someone somewhere will do it.
