Latest Edge teases new Elite for next issue?

edge.jpg

The teaser page of the latest Edge - as you can see here on NeoGAF - shows a wireframe spaceship relating to the next issue.

Is it David Braben’s new Elite? The UK PC underground reckons the ship looks too complex for the ancient space-based game, but is struggling to place it.

Got to be Elite for a cover, innit? And if not, what is it?

It’s posts like this that get us up in the morning.

That actually looks like a ship from Starion rather than Elite.

    Or possibly Starglider.

  2. patlike said:

Someone mentioned Starglider to me this morning. Would they do a cover on that, though?

  3. Blerk said:

lool! We’ve been through this on NeoGAF AND Eurogamer, despite the fact that I pointed out hours ago that the picture is from old Speccy classic “Starion” by Melbourne House. :-D

  4. Blerk said:

Here’s your proofage. And more, if you need it.

I somehow doubt it’s going to be a Starion feature, given that there’s about four people in the entire universe who actually remember it. :-)

  5. I’m going for an exclusive on Infinite Space, Platinum Games’ space opera RPG for DS.

I’d be surprised. Unless Jez San has revived the IP as some sort of huge sandbox-style job.

Unlikely I know but whatever that ship is, it’s not on the Elite Ship chart…

    /looks at Blerk’s post

    /high fives self

  8. Blerk said:

Wow, two of the four people in one place! Who’d have thunk it? :-D

I loved Starion. It was no Elite, but it was awesomes. And bugged to buggery.

  9. patlike said:

Never heard of it. I’m clearly not 733t hardcore enough.

    *drowns self in acid*

    :D

When I saw this the morning I thought it was for Elite - but Starion - WTF??? I’ve never heard of that game.

  12. Blerk said:

Damn straight. I am teh awesomes.

  13. pjmaybe said:

Starion was a seriously mainstream speccy game though back in the day.

I always thought it was funny that they obviously swiped the name from a Jap car of the time. Which in turn was named ‘Starion’ instead of ‘Stallion’ due to a little east-west mispronunciation.

Anyhoo, if there’s some way this is being revived, colour me gobsmacked.

    EPIC FAIL.

    But much lolz.

  15. Truk said:

Is it possible Edge got the image wrong? :-D

  16. deftangel said:

Speaking of Jez San….the first thing I thought of when I saw that in my copy this morning was Starfox. I quickly changed my mind though as Nintendo don’t make games for us any more :P

Is it possible Edge got the image wrong?

That would be an über-pwn, elevating me to God-like status. :-D

  18. patlike said:

Apparently the last time they did an Elite story they ran a pic of a ship that wasn’t in the game.

looks like a ship from starfox

  20. Blerk said:

This picture appears to have an uncanny effect on the people who view it, completely removing their ability to read! :-D

  21. Axle said:

I think I’ve only ever correctly identified one of Edge’s tenuous links to the ‘Next Issue’ and that was GTA IV.

If it’s any of Braben’s games then it probably WON’T appear in the next issue . . .

  22. Blerk said:

I got the Prince of Persia one a few months back.

  23. SplatteredHouse said:

It does look like one of the Starfox craft, but that’s one seriously jaggy image, so I’ll have to go along with those who are suggesting something more speccy.

  24. Blerk said:

    It’s not a “suggestion”! I presented proof! :-D

  25. ecu said:

I don’t think I have ever got one of the “next issue” things in Edge, and I’ve been a subscriber for years. They’re always too obscure. Is it supposed to be representing what’s on the cover of the next issue? The previous issue had a screwdriver and spanner crossing to look like an X. My new issue arrived today, and the closest thing I can link it to is the Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts feature.

  26. haowan said:

Now you know how it feels Blerk? :D

  27. Tonka said:

It can’t be Starfox though. It had filled polys.

  28. Weeble said:

Looks like a ship from the old Commodore 64 Mercenary game to me.

  29. falviousuk said:

    I

I think I’ve solved this one. On the third page of Edge where the credits are listed there is a reference to ‘Starfield image on p162 courtesy of Ironclad Games’.

Ironclad Games made RTS ‘Sins of a Solar Empire’ so I would guess that it has something to do with a sequel to that game?
