But since spring 2008 you can at least reregister your DLCs if you are forced to change your 360 (probably due to the infamous RRoD). @ FireFly

I know that DVDs also do not "live" forever, but at least you can do a (albeit illegal) backup (thanks to DVD-Jon) of your DVD-collection. And to be honest I don't see any reasons why Sony should NOT let consumer download a once purchased game or movie as many times as they want. The DLCs are strictly tied to the user-account, aren't they? The problem here, as with all DLCs, is that any HDD _WILL_ fail sooner or later.
I know that DVDs also do not “live” forever, but at least you can do a (albeit illegal) backup (thanks to DVD-Jon) of your DVD-collection.

(in as much as, if I lost my DVD copy, I would then no longer be able to watch the content of that disc). So, it operates like a rental, but without the time limit? That's IT?!? :o That's all you get, for the extra moneyz that you're no doubt paying? If anything, it looks like they're trying to prioritise rentals over purchases, to me. As there, you decide you want to watch something you see in their library, and then you do, and after you have, it's quickly gone from the hard drive. Wait.
