A poster on NeoGAF has got hold of the latest Nintendo Power magazine which reveals, amongst many other things, that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars DS will feature cell-shaded graphics and be an M-rated game.
That’s not all however. In fact, there’s so much info, we’re going to create a nice, long, bullet-pointed list for you to enjoy with your morning coffee.
Down below.
By Mike Bowden
- True GTA game – sandbox gameplay, open-world environment, gritty crime narrative.
- M-rating
- Isometric camera angle
- Cel-shaded polygons w/ black borders
- good touch-screen implementation – “tasteful” minigames, streamlining interface
- UI based on a PDA – hub for email, contacts, map, music player, GPS, stat-tracking
- stats uploaded to Rockstar Social Club website via Wi-Fi
- finger-sized icons
- missions designed for shorter periods of play, arcade quality
- aiming with control pad, auto targeting with R button
- subtle autosteer
- if you fail a mission, you can jump back to the action sequence
- chain gun, flamethrower
- good portion of Liberty City is modeled in the game (different routes than console games)
- no probems with load times, draw-in or frame rate
- lots of pedestrians, cars, etc on screen
- Wanted system – objective is to disable police cars any way possible
- real-time weather effects, 24-hour day/night cycle
- lots of radio stations to listen to (more instrumentals than vocals)
- 800,000 lines of hand-optimized source code (hey, the people like the info, right?)
- no details yet on multiplayer/Wi-Fi features

With a list like that it’s gonna sell. Any talk of a PSP game?

I lost faith in rockstar with the release of GTA 4. Wont be getting this.

I’m interested. A bit suspicious of the isometric viewpoint, but we’ll see. Then again… I’m getting GTA GBA horror flashbacks now. That was seriously shit.

I had a go at my first sanbox game last night. NMH no less. I know it’s sandbox light but I can see the appeal in the genre.
What I wanted to say is that this sounds interesting. Especially the bit about short burst game play.

Take 2 must be in a bad way.
To be totally honest.

What are you talking about? Why wouldn’t they want to do a DS version? I’m guessing they like money as much as the next man.

Completely, but never enough to break from the games style.
I would have expected them atleast keep the same names (not Chinatown) and perhaps stayed with the GTAIII style.
But Cel shaded sounds like this is goign to be GTA Advanced.
Blerk said:
Well, the 2D images in GTA3 et al were almost cel-shaded to begin with. If they did the whole game like those then it wouldn’t really break with the style. And you have to play to a platform’s strengths – you might have noticed that pretty much all 3D games on the DS look like arse.

Blerk, I agree GTAIII was my favoruite in the series becuase of it.
It did have a very understated stylised direction.
And GTAIV despite being a boiling cow pat (sorry pat) also had an excellent art direction, with the whole saturated shadows thing.

GTAIV despite being a boiling cow pat
You mean it was great?
No_PUDding said:
You’d only say that if you hadn’t played the others.
This game was truely a step back. But I still commend Rockstar for not just sticking to the same formula.

Huh? I’m one of the biggest GTA fans around, I’ve played and completed every GTA game, every 3D GTA at 100%, except San Andreas (97.something%). IV was fantastic. It wasn’t a step back at all, but it was a slightly different type of game. Which is probably good, given the amount of people that complained about GTA becoming stale.

I have had GTA since 1998. Tea stains and all. Only one I didn’t ‘complete’ (2D ones were arcadey with less story) was London 1961, becuase it was on the PC.
GTA2 was great and GTAIII was better. Downhill from there.
GTAIV was seriously toned and constrictive. Something the GTA series is famous for doing the opposite of.

Anyway I actually came to post these scans (how allowed is that?).
They reek of milk.

And I have, that was my point.

Oh dear – are those “hotwiring a car” and “throwing out the rubbish” mini-games I see?
I wonder how far out the camera pulls? Biggest issue with the old GTAs these days is not being able to see far enough in the distance to drive properly at speed.
