CVG reckons that a third instalment of the Baldur’s Gate series is in development, but it’s not being handled by BioWare.
“Although it won’t be ready for at least another year, we’ve heard the RPG sequel is coming along at an as-yet-unnamed developer and Neverwinter Nights 2 house Atari,” says the site.
It’s rumour Friday, it appears.

Hmmm, there is a strange legal issue with that. Interplay (bless ‘em) own the right to the Baldur’s Gate IP, to the extent that they can make Baldur’s Gate D&D games without actually having the D&D licence. Hence why those slashers on the PS2 had the BG logo slapped on them even after WOTC made the deal with Atari. When Interplay went down they were developing BG3, or at least, pre-prodcution of the title was going down at Black Isle alongside Fallout 3.
Further investigation appears that Interplay and Atari play along, so I guess it could happen. I think PST is in Limbo though.

I’m betting Obsidian as the developer – Atari seem to love them and they’re the Bioware-sequel guys anyway. KOTOR 2 / NWN 2 after all…
Also, please, please bring back Planescape Torment…! Best fantasy world ever!
