Kotick: Guitar Hero “outselling Rock Band 6:1″

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia XVII Conference this week, Activision boss Bobby Kotick claimed to be dominating the rhythm action category with Guitar Hero, outselling EA’s Rock Band by 600 percent.

“We’re outselling [Rock Band] 6:1,” he said. “When you think about the access we have to 30 percent of the world’s music at Universal, we have a unique advantage there.

“I would also say when you look at resources, you know, our next-nearest competitor has a couple of hundred people working on these projects, we have close to 2,000 people just dedicated to the Guitar Hero note tracking, introduction of new hardware, introduction of new software, and so we just have a lot more in the way of resources available to us to continue to dominate the category.”

Blimey. Thanks, Kotaku.

Harmonix really shot themselves in the foot with this one.
I put this down to their timed exclusivity deal with Microsoft which saw the PS3 version of Rock Band only just released. Months behind the 360 version.
Then again, I suppose Microsoft lined their pockets with plenty of cash so they probably don’t feel too hard done by.
When you got all that money floating around you can just throw money at people and buy all the exclusivity deals you want.

Kudos to Capcom for saying they wont do that sort of thing any more.

Er… surely the totally ridiculous European pricing was to blame rather than the temporary exclusive deal? The other versions didn’t exactly set the charts alight last week.

Hang on.

How many versions of Guitar Hero are out there compared to versions of Rock Band??

6:1? 7:1?

Ratios and percentages mean nothing without contextual information and proper numbers to substantiate them.
