Gamers are slim, depressed, drug addicts, says survey

Researchers at the University of Southern California have concluded that US gamers are slimmer than the average American, but are more prone to depressions and “substance abuse,” NewScientistTech reports.

The results have been drawn from 7,000 EQII players. From the piece:

The results suggest that adult gamers have an average body mass index of 25.2, compared to the overall American average of 28. The average gamer also engages in vigorous exercise once or twice a week, which the researchers say is more than most Americans. The reasons for this are not obvious, although the team suggest it may be because more educated, wealthier people are attracted to computer games, and these people also tend to take better care of their health.

The downside, however, was that the gamers reported more cases of depression and substance abuse than their compatriots. “They may be drawn to use the game to help deal with emotional distress,” says team member Scott Caplan of the University of Delaware.

WAR’s nearly installed. God only knows it’ll stave off the pain. More through the link.

Well, I know the reason for all of these issues:

We weigh less because we’re too engrossed in finding that last COG that we forget to eat.

We exercise more because hours upon hours in a dark room make use crave sunlight every now and then. Plus we need to go outside occasionally to make sure we are not really being invaded by Valkyries in string bikinis (unfortunately not).

Depression is greater because, lets face it, if you can only find 419/420 flags in Assassin’s Creed you’d be depressed too.

I am thin correct, not depressed, and I don’t take drugs.

But a friend or two are indeed all 3, and gamers. So I am not denying it.

I saw the article earlier, the link is this here.

I think the implication “depression” => “gaming” is what led to those results on the gamers’ mental condition. I mean, socializing in games is better than solitude, innit?

By the way, the survey isn’t anything near anti-gaming and infuriating as you make it sound :)

25.2 isn’t slim… though it might seem that way in comparison to the average American. :D

American average is a key word there.

Hey man I don’t do drugs cant afford them with the price of games.

Wait a minute… they conduct a survey amongst MMO players and then claim it says something meaningful about gamers in general? Like Yahtzee said about Eve players, mmo nerds are to nerds what nerds are to normal people. Of course they’re gonna be depressed saddos! They wouldn’t play EQII otherwise!

playing a mmo doesn’t automatically make you depressed sigh. I played WoW and I’m not depressed or take drugs. I’am slim though but I would rather be slim than a fatty.

They mistyped “week” instead of “day”. And “vigorous exercise” instead of “wanking”.
