Banjo: “This is a new concept in games”

Banjo dev boss Salvatore Fileccia has detailed the thinking bahind Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts in a new interview with GamerScoreBlog, calling the reinvention a “new concept in games.”

“This is not just a platformer,” he said. “Obviously, Banjo has a deep history in platformers, and part of that is in the game, so we have everything there from the original Banjos: the collecting, the puzzle-solving and that sort of thing.

“This is a new concept in games. Come and try it. We’re sure everyone’s going to find it fun. It’s not just the platforming. It’s user-generated content. It’s literally the kind of game you can play the way you want to play, rather than the way the designer wanted you to play.”

He’s not wrong. Look at Spore, look at Littlebigplanet and look at Banjo, it’s all about making stuff yourself in the game.

Obviously, I’ll reserve judgement until the full game is released but everything I’ve been shown so far of this game’s ‘unique and new’ aspects seems very very very very much like the vehicle building bits in both Kingdom Hearts games.

As for creating and sharing content. No. That’s not new. Maybe for a 360, but not “a new concept in games”.

But with Spore and LBP you can share that stuff with other users. The same isn’t true of Banjo, is it? And can you make levels and stuff as well as cars? Calling it user-created content seems to be stretching it a little.

You can share the vehicle designs… to the best of my knowledge you can’t create anything else.

Well it might not be brand new, but its the (this makes me feel very dirty and I apologise) 2.0 aspect that is coming into games.
