Peter Moore – Sony didn’t deliver with the Emotion Engine and Killzone 2

Peter Moore’s on a roll. Having already said this week that he personally took the decision to can Dreamcast, he’s now accused Sony of over-promising and under-delivering with both PS2 and PS3.

“I was angry with Sony at the time [of Dreamcast's demise], but in their shoes I probably would have done the same thing,” he said.

“They did a tremendous job – and it’s a story they repeated in 2005 with Killzone – where they promised the consumer something they probably believed they were going to deliver, but they never did.

“PlayStation 2 – it was the emotion engine it was games coming to life, Real Player was going to be on there, a full network browser… and they just never delivered.”

Moore’s comments come from the second part part of an interview with the Guardian. Again, essential reading.

Seems someone’s slipped some truth serum into the drinks of everyone called Peter who works in the games industry.

Loving these interviews, and I can perfectly understand why Sony pissed him off so much, with the emotion engine stuff and Killzone 2 footage. But then I still think it’s a smart tactic, providing you get the balance between reality and fantasy right.

I think Sony have mostly got away with it for Killzone 2, because I don’t think anybody expected Guerilla to deliver as closely as they have done to that original target footage, but it’s still left a sour taste in many people’s mouths, and I think the whole “target render” approach has become a wearisome trait of Sony, and something they need to fix for the next E3.

I think this generation has kicked Sony up the ass.

I don’t think we’ll be seeing anymore pre-rendered stuff cliaming to be in-game.

Although he’s right, look at how much effort has been put into changing the console this time round. It’s not a lazy PS2 effort. They are updating, hopefully Home and lots of things to make it competetive this generation.

And it’s weird he talks about delivering, when there aren’t any reviews out.

They’re not completely over their pre-rendered fixation, as the MAG unveil showed.

Yes, but no one was ever claimin it was in-game. It was a teaser, and we’ve already seen the first shot of it. It’s very comparable – if a tiny bit generic.

I suppose it’s just something to show, without unveiling anything about the actual game.

Look, all 360 fanboys just understand this. The 360 is fading in the background. The price drop was a last ditch effort to gain sales. It’s failing in Europe , it’s failing in Asia; the only place that it is doing good is good ole america. Peter Moore needs to watch his tongue because he’s now working for a supposedly neutral software co. (EA). I’m going to boycott ea because he can’t help but to try to give the xbox an advantage by making an inferior quality ps3 game compared to it’s 360 counterpart. Even though the ps3 is new the hardware is better and the possibilities are being discovered. Whatever the ps2 was supposed to be the ps3 is and more !

Just like the inferior PS2 was the main development platform for cross-platform titles last generation because it was the market leader and released earlier, the 360 has taken that role this generation for the same reasons.

It was inevitable that the PS3 would catch up but it’s taken a long time.
