Rumour: Euro 360 cut to be announced next week

According to this Gamer.tm story, a source has said that Microsoft is to announce a European Xbox 360 price cut at “event the company is due to hold during the week of 22 September.”

The piece arrives after an apparent leak detailing the new prices came from Woolworths last week.

“Our source confirmed that the prices shown in the leaked Woolworths catalogue image – GBP 129.99 for the Arcade, GBP 169.99 for the 60GB model and GBP 229.99 for the Elite – were official,” says the Gamer.tm story.

“Our source also added that the leak had left Microsoft fuming, and that all of the above information came directly from Microsoft.”

and I’m sure they will be best pleased about another leak if it turns out to be true.

I hope not. I was about to get a PS3 after christmas, but if the 360 lowers even more, it’s a hard decision again.

Several points:

1. Good!
2. Can we confirm that such a meeting is indeed scheduled to take place? It’s the first I’ve heard of it.
3. Who the hell are Gamer.tm anyway, and why should I believe them? :-)
4. Could Sony even remotely contemplate staying at 300 quids with yet another drop to the full fat 360?

I think this will probably turn out to be real. Those catalogue scans seemed pretty self-explanatory.

Got some feelers out with retail bods. Hopefully get something in the next day or so. I’d be very surprised if this isn’t real.

Finally! It will be interesting to see what effect this will have this fall. This in light of the 360 doing just OK in the EU.

@wz

How is it more difficult again? PS3 is completely different from the 360. You either want one where you can play different exclusives, or one that’s cheaper – for whatever you want (I have no idea).

From where I’m sitting there’s no choice at all. 95% the same games on both platforms, except one costs 300 notes and the other costs (potentially) 170. That’s almost half the price for something which does mostly the same job. Unless you’re buying for a particular exclusive or the Blu-Ray, you’d have to work pretty hard to justify a PS3 at the minute.

I look forward to seeing Soylent Green’s expert analysis of this news.

Blerk, if he was going to choose between a second 360 and a PS3, suddenly it isn’t as easy a justification. Especially if he had the idea of buying it in the first place.

And lets face it, the exclusive games are usually the best on both systems.

129.99 is a pure bargain, and makes the decision of what console to go for a real no brainer.

The price cuts and bundling of the 360 are astounding. It’s amazing how much it’s dropped in price over 3 years.

They need to improve the tech though. Mine was so unstable that it just wasn’t worth keeping. I realise that forum types “know” MS have improved things but a case redesign or some other push to assure people of the actual hardware improvements would help get it into even more hands.

The thing is, if Microsoft did redesign the 360 into a smaller case or something, they’d probably balls it up again. Green square of death, or something. :-D
