Molyneux: This is what’s rubbish about Fable II

Speaking to OXM, Peter Molyneux’s admitted that Fable II isn’t a constant mega-high. Honesty, we find, is the best policy.

“There’s low spots in the game,” he said. “It’s no one’s fault that these low spots are there, it’s just there’s a lot to this game.”

But that’s not all.

“I think the lip-sync is pretty bad, you know, the quality of the animation falls off, you know, quite a lot, I think the navigation can be a bit dodgy sometimes, I think the dog can… get a bit fractured sometimes.”

    More to the point it’s a shame there wasn’t time to iron them out.

    And I am still on the grounds where this is defitnely a game I want but won’t be getting. About the navigation, I really don’t like the breadcrumbs idea. It seems a bit distracting to me.

    But maybe this is a sign of a great game. It certainly defuses hype, I am sure it’s a PR trick.

    Gotta agree with this. Yes, I know it can be turned *off* but the fact its there in the first place is a bit… meh! This is why I fear of an RPG-lite experience.

    They should have given you an incomplete map and then let you amend it. I love the island in Phantom Hourglass that you have to map yourself.

    Psycho, is there an alternative to the breacrumbs? Becuase if not that is my SOLE complaint about the game. Nothing else that would make me not want to get it.

    TBH though, I kinda like maps that fill themselves in as you travel. Breadcrumbs can probably get lost though, doesn’t sound too good.

    No_PUDding, the breadcrumb trail brightness can be adjusted however you like. I can’t say I found it that distracting at all, it’s easy enough to just wander about.

    It might have made sense for Peter to talk about such things post the reviews rather than now but they’re relatively minor quibbles in the context of the whole thing.

    The Morrowind map was both great and crap. I often resorted to the paper map to find paths because world view was too zoomed out.

    I want a 3D world that I have to map myself with dead reckoning and spotting landmarks. This wouldn’t rule out being able to buy area maps in the game that you can onion-skin with your map. You could also show your map to a buddy in co-op so they can crib from your work.

    For Morrowidn they had the Local and the World map, I thoguht it worked perfectly.

    And I disagree with whoever said you don’t need a map for this kind of game. And I am pleased to see Fable 2 has one.
