Posting on the EA forums, a UK staffer for the publisher has claimed that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of FIFA 09 are “different” to the PC SKU as the huge majority of home computers simply wouldn’t be able to play them. Full thing:
The PC version of FIFA 09 is different to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions because of the CPU processing power required for the architecture of the game.
The majority of gamer’s PC’s do not have enough CPU processing power for this architecture, so FIFA09 on PC has been built to have the best possible graphics and gameplay engine while still being accessible to as many fans of the game as possible. If the architecture was identical to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, FIFA09 on PC would only be accessible to 1-3% of the PC systems on the market.
Having said that, FIFA09 on PC delivers a very deep gameplay engine, along with leading-edge visuals.
So there you have it. Want the best looking FIFA? Buy yourself a nice console.

What a load of bollocks! Next, EA will then blame the pirates for poor sales. If I wanted to play this turd, my PC is more than capable. As are the majority of gamers PCs.
To claim that the console is better than the PC clearly shows that the person posting this has a serious lack of intelligence – much like the gameplay in Fifa

He is not saying that consoles are better than pc’s, just consoles are better than most people’s PC’s. If the sims and warcraft have taught us anything is that its best to aim for what was new 2 years ago for the pc as it will run on a greater range of systems. FIFA will sell to the none hardcore crowd as a majority who will run it on laptops or pc’s that are not upgraded all the time.
Logical no? Everyone seems to have gone mental these days!

Well, either that or I wish they’d release it anyway.

Well he is right only a tiny handful of PC’s that are used for gaming have more processing power than the PS3/X360.
Look at all the most popular computer games they target the low end of PC gaming not the high end.
I’m honestly surprised more developers don’t do this (Ubisoft has too) as taking out the “next gen” visuals often solves the problem of performance where its really what’s sitting between the chair and the keyboard is the problem.
Too many clueless gamers set the visual levels beyond what there machine is capable of & then complain about the experience. Taking away the high end visuals neatly solves that problem and also ensures it runs better on most systems.
Of course PC gaming is rife with graphics whores and snobs who loudly object to such practises but I hope EA ignores them.

If he had said “The majority of PC users PC’s do not have the CPU power” then I would agree with him, but he said “the majority of gamer’s PC’s do not have the CPU power” which make me cry bollocks on a few levels.
If you are a gamer you will have a good CPU and GFX card which will easy cope with, and go beyond, anything that the PS3 and Xbox360 can do. So he is talking rubbish.
Although, admittedly, this game is aimed at the those who like Football, not soccer, games so they might have not upgraded in a few years. BUt then again, whats the cost of upgrading your PC now? A new Dual core and 9600GT with 2gb ram is less than £380, and offers more power than the PS3 and Xbox360.
Anyway, I wonder if the consoles can really handle it. Some of the latest games on them have been rather poor in the FPS and quality areas whilst the same games that have come out on the PC have not had issues. (Bioshock, Grid, GoW and Mass Effect come to mind)

I wonder if he’s ever considered scaling the game so it works on a wide range of PCs. I really don’t think you need a quad core CPU to track 22 players, a ball and 3 officials.
I could understand if they said that the PC version doesn’t sell well enough to justify a full port but this is just a poor lie.
Having said that sports games should be played on a console ;o)

He is probably talking only about architecture of consoles and the game engine which couldnt be only ported to PCs because they wouldnt handle processes well. So it will be neccesary to work on the engine to make it better compatible with the PCs. Is it really so hard to do it EA? Still I like new graphics on PCs since they are “same as consoles” (read – using same assets). Now I please give us console gameplay!

Its a sensible approach in terms business, enabling more people to play it. But knowing its an inferior product when you purchase hurts.

Kalain, even if he meant the majority of gamer PCs, it would make some sense as well. After all, what percentage of gamer PCs, if any, are equipped with anything remotely close to being equivalent to an 8-core Cell processor? Even if you’re talking about the 360’s triple-core PowerPC CPU, it would still be rare to see a gamer’s PC strictly match up or beat it in every single regard or performance metric.

i think you missed the point of what he was saying, he didn’t say it wouldn’t run on a pc he said it wouldn’t run on most PC’s which is also true of bioshock and gears of war. PC gaming might offer better grafix but let’s face it who want’s to pay three hundred pound for grafix cards every two years, PC gaming is a bit to much like hard work for me.

LOL, yeah and you need to buy one of these every couple of years not to mention that most real people haven’t got a fucking clue about all of that techno babel crap, i paid two hundred and eighty pound for my 360 and haven’t needed any £380 upgrades in three years and wont for another few and when i do all i’ll have to do is plug it into my TV. PC gaming is an absolute joke.

Perhaps its a play on words. I mean, there are billions of PCs out there. Amongst them are gaming PCs, and amongst those are FIFA fans. Somehow that pans out to 1 – 3% of PCs…… worldwide.
