Media Molecule: We couldn’t have made LBP on Xbox 360 “as it is”

littlebigplanet3.jpg

Speaking to GI, Media Molecule boss Alex Evans has issued the inevitable statement: LittleBigPlanet couldn’t have been made on Xbox 360.

“With LBP as it is, we couldn’t have made it on the Xbox 360 and the reason for that is actually because we designed it around the PS3′s strengths,” he said.

“In other words, if you’re a game designer, from day one you know your platform, and you just cane it on that platform. You’re not worrying about cross-platform, you’re not worrying about anyone else’s hardware design.”

Evans was quick to play down that such a statement was any criticism of Microsoft’s console.

“The 360 is an incredibly capable machine, and you could make a user-generated content game on it, no question – just as you could make one on the PS2 or the Megadrive, or any platform,” he said. “But because we picked our platform, you go and you use every available bit of space, every little processor cycle.”

It had to come didn’t it? Now all we need is for them to say, “without Blu-Ray blah blah blah” and the spiel will be complete.

Must be in the contract with Sony that you have to mention how wonderful PS3 is at least once with a selection of keywords.

But it’s TRUE!

Resistance: FoM was only possible on PS3, as was Motorstorm.

Oh my…

Seems like VG247 has sold out to the ways of troll baiting.

The title of this post conveniently misses the all important, context setting, part of the statement: “With LBP as it is”

He’s clearly talking about the fact that the game has been specifically designed for the PS3, which would rule out a straight forward port, so why twist it??

It is true. Mostly because Sony own the rights to it. :D

I hear that Uncharted wouldn’t be possible on the Xbox2.

Wii Sports definitely would not be possible on the 360, PS3, or Atari 2600.

I just noticed, did he say they’re using every available processor cycle? Like, 100% of the system’s capability?

You’re always going to be using every processor cycle. The question is how efficiently you do it. :)

It’s easy to use 100% of a machine’s capacity. The real test is how much stuff you’re actually doing within that capacity. It’s basically a meaningless statistic that devs like to throw around to make themselves look big and important. :-)

PT: Nah, you’re not. And didn’t that Uncharted guy say something about 30% for their game?

Nethack isn’t possible on the 360… because it doesn’t support in-game keyboard use.

Hardly a controversial statement when you read his full quote. All he’s really saying is, “We built LittleBigPlanet to the PS3′s strengths”. Nothing wrong with that, I’m sure Bungie built Halo 3 to the 360′s strenghts.

This is a stupid comment section.

In the same way you can’t put mods on the 360 the PS3 is far more open source and friendly to this kind of stuff. That’s all it means.

And I imagine it would technically difficult to port it to the 360. Least of all becuase Sony own it.

Are you guys trying to see how many LBP stories you you can fit on one page?

It hasn’t even started yet, seriously. Mid-October’s going to be Sackboy-tastic.

Sackboytastic sounds nasty as.

Anyway, I hope it won’t be, there are MANY great games coming up around that time that I expect to hear about more such as Far Cry 2, Fable 2 and some others.
