Star Wars: TFU - First reviews sting, OTR indications not looking good

starwarsforceunleashed.JPG

The first magazine reviews are in for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and it’s all looking a bit painful so far.

According to Metacritic the four reviews so far have left an average of 68 percent. Here’s who’s scored it:

  • OXM - 75
  • GamePro - 7
  • gamesTM - 7
  • EGM - 56

Some of the stuff we’ve been told off the record about TFU this week really isn’t encouraging. And we’ll leave it at that.

Game’s out on September 19.

    Demo was underwhelming, I thought.

  2. Gamoc said:

Those 7s are about what I thought it’d get based on the demo.

  3. BraveArse said:

Yup - agreed - the demo made me want to cry. The last Star Wars game I actually liked was Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. That was kicking ass with the force :(

  4. Robo_1 said:

Everything just felt too floaty, the combat had no weight to it, and the QTE for the finisher was bit “me too”.

That’s not to say I didn’t get some fun out of it, and I’ll probably pick it up cheap to plug next years summer gap.

I would have loved this game if it was’nt Star Wars.

Imagine what it could have been like if they’d used the Psi-Ops universe or something like that.

Star Wars ruins everything it touches. With moral aids.

    Uh…

    Bad reviews?

Media is being foul recently, or the next gen euphoria is wearing off. welcome to being far enough into the generation that reviewers don’t glaze over the shit.

I like it!! and i will buy it,the questions is for what console?mmmmm!!

    three words: quick time events.

that’s all I needed to see in the demo to take this game off my purchase list.

  9. XDamage said:

Hmm, thought the demo was fun enough. :| Oh well, if it gets raped further by reviewers, I’ll cancel my pre-order.

Since when the fuck did “7″ equal “shit”?

Typical ignorance. I mean, the GamesTM review even said that it’s one of the most epic Star Wars games in years, a few nagging flaws beside.

“7″ is supposed to indicate a good tittle with a few flaws, and everyone’s acting like it means the game is entirely crap. Don’t even get me started on EGM’s legitimacy as a mature source of information…

Gaming seems to be the only medium around that is so fucking sensitive about its scoring that anything that doesn’t have an “8″ at the start of is is view as a terrible score.

5 = average. Anything higher than it = above average.

Seriously, gaming needs to grow up out of this adolescent scoring mentality. It’s fucking stupid, and defeats the whole point of reviews in the first place.

  11. XDamage said:

Agreed. I’ll wait and see what IGN and Eurogamer have to say about it. Based on what I experienced with the demo, it’s a definite buy for me.

But why the hell was there a normal stormtrooper inside the AT-ST when the apprentice cut it open. It should have been one of these guys: http://www.decipher.com/starwars/cardlists/endor/dark/images/atstpilot.gif [/starwars geek rant] ;)

They decided that guy looked too gay and cut him.

  13. XDamage said:

    Probably yeah. :D

When you charge 60+ euros as an entrence fee, “above avarage” is not enough.
A smaller, less hyped game might get away with it but when you putt something forward as being a revolutairy game, a return to high quality for Lucas Arts, it’s just not enough.

The problem is increased due to the fact that game reviews are plagued with the “7 to 10″ scoring range many sites and magazines never stepp beyond. Making a 7 a bad score.

Sure, game reviews and the gaming press in general need to mature, but that woulden’t change the games quality. It would probably just lower it’s score even more.

    WTF?
I´ve played the demo and it seems like a nice game. o.O

  16. lelik said:

i think the game is amazing maybe you guys just suck at the force eh? only time i used my lightsaber in the demo was against the at st boss dude thing

  17. BraveArse said:

No - it wasn’t difficult - for some of us it was underwhelming/boring/cry-making - I don’t think there was much to trouble anyone in the demo.

I just wish they’d looked at Mass Effect or even one of their own earlier better games when deciding how to “Kick Ass with The Force”.

  18. Whizzo said:

What’s so annoying about TFU, from playing the demo, is that Psi-Ops is four years old and a better game.

  19. rainer said:

Those scores are pretty much what I expected.

Warning bells were ringing early on with the TFU as Lucasarts were trying to sell the game on it’s technical merits with buzzwords, coupled with till recently the fact that they were not allowing journalists play builds of the game shows they knew they didn’t have a hit on their hands.

(I’m pretty sure they hired guerilla marketing on this one as well given the “hype”)

The demo was very mediocre and the main character - apprentice was some sort of emo douchebag you could just tell from the start (anikin again all over LOL) which means instant dislike for many.

Lucasarts badly needs to get its act together either that or throw in the towel on game development and outsource everything to studios with better talent.

Can’t wait for higher profile reviews to come out. I hardly trust the few sentences and scores that have popped up on metacritic until now, but judging from the demo (which really shouldn’t be used to judge the whole game), it sure as hell doesn’t deserve a 56/100. :D

It can’t be as bad as Haze for example. ;)
