The Eurogamer.pt video is utter fiction. They've messed up the video capture on PS3. It just doesn't look like that.

Syrok, the depth comes in the other event types and in the techniques you have to use to get faster lap times and higher scores. You have to think in terms of a 3D racing line, You also need to plan when you use boost and when you don't because boosting compromises the tricks available to you temporarily. It makes boost more valuable. It's a bit like a sport really. Knowing the rules is just the fist step. Mastering it takes ages and you can always get better. The later stages are nails and make you have to learn the finer techniques to get through.

A new TV is always nice.

Had time to download it myself now and came to the following conclusions:
a) The above video is not very representative
b) The game is a bit shallow
c) I need a new TV

I've always found Gamersyde try the hardest with their comparison vids. Plus they tend to have the best vids on the net anyway as they're one of the few people that seem to know how to make vids without having them full of compression artifacts.

Indeed. It's all about HDMI and full-range RGB, as used by Eurogamer UK (and clearly not .pt). There's no other way to do an accurate comparison. No digital precision means that all bets are off.

It's worth pointing out though that PS3 *does* tend to output a less saturated image compared to Xbox 360 as the Eurogamer UK shots often show. Developers need to individually calibrate both versions to get a match - Burnout Paradise is a good example of this; the colour balance is basically identical.

I would like to see Comparison videos done by the people actually making the games these days. Just so we can be shown how similar the versions actually are.

Bearing in mind these are the people who often tell us the versions are the same when they're not, they're the last people I'd trust...

I'm a PS3 player, but I doubt that Bioshock actually looks BETTER than it did on 360. Same, yes, but better? I doubt it.

I know this is going to make me sound like a raving fanboi but I've just replayed the Pure demo and EG's comparison vids are utter BS. The PS3 version is FAR from washed out and looks nothing like those clips show

I now all Eurogamer.pt team (I am Portuguese).
So I asked them: "WTF is this?".
And maybe, just MAYBE there is a problema with the TV and/or with the movie camera.
Pure PS3 version is not so dark.

My "sweeping statement" earlier is from own experience. But I'm using component for both machines (360/PS3) which might explain it. Although I've read it several times over.

Yeah, that should work as a bare minimum I guess. I used this one for calibration:

But for anyone who have one of the apparently few Full RGB supporting sets, I highly recommend it! :D

It's about 10% of modern TVs that support it. It's usually used more for monitors than TVs.

There's a good test here: http://nicolaspeople.com/ch3rokeesblog/?p=13

...and you'd probably already know if you've properly calibrated your TV (but most don't, even though they should)

Yeah, of course. I only speak out of personal experience.
But I'm pretty sure most screens from 2007 and onward can draw benefit from it being turned on. But as wz said, I guess it's up to each and every customer if he or she prefer cartoon-like vibrancy, or more natural bland colors.

XDamage: Sure, there are obviously screens that support it... but most don't which is why people shouldn't be so quick to just randomly turn on an option they don't understand.

When I see the so called "washed out" PS3 vids, I cannot help but prefer them to the oh-so-colourful variants. At least in front of my window, nature doesn't have that Oblivion-esque vibrancy and glare you see in games lately.

@ Psychotext. Full RGB works like a charm on newer Bravia sets (and even on my nearly two year old 40w2000). Makes for quite the difference. ;)

I remember how Assassin's Creed looked like bland crap before turning it on.

Agreed Psychotext, it reduces detail. Not that you can really see, but it does.

I don't really mind, nowadays it's just a sign of careless development when the versions aren't identical.

Or bad capture by the site.

As I recall these tests have always been done without calibrating the capture device properly for each console. Plus of course not many people have access to HDMI capture devices which doesn't help because the PS3 component output isn't great compared to its HDMI output.

XDamage: There are very few screens that you'd use Full RGB on. I've seen so many people turn the option on thinking it would help when in fact all they've done is created black crush.

Probably just a case of leaving the Full RGB setting off, as usual.

EG's colour settings on their PS3 are definitely fucked up. I've looked at their previous comparisons on games I own and they're *always* washed out compared to how rich the colours look on my TV set

Just had a quick play on Pure then, and yeah, it's nowhere near as pale as the EG comparison.

I'm on a crusty old SD set though, but I see no discernible difference between what I was just playing and the 360 video. Of course my own colour and contrast settings may alter things, but then everyone can tune that to their taste.

The game itself seemed like a bit of a laugh. Excite Truck meets Motorstorm meets SSX. Good fun but I doubt it'll be a full price purchase.

Just found a good bit of info about why the PS3 colour palette may appear a little more washed out than 360's:

Well here's a thing.......I put my PC LCD next to my Bravia and had this video running next to the demo running from my PS3. Sorry Eurogamer, but your footage of Pure on the PS3 looks nothing like my footage of Pure on the PS3.

Another case of deliberately not using the optimised settings of the PS3 because "that's how it coms out of the box". We've been here before remember.

And Syrok is right: part of this video suggests that the PS3 is showing some of the game with almost no colour AT ALL. Again, not on my TV.

Now, I'll get my brother in law to run his 360 and PS3 Pure demos side by side with the PAP feature..........
