Morriss - the sidequests are generally pretty rubbish fetch-and-carry stuff, but there are a couple of wee dungeony asides, and a substantial (and fucking tough) post-game labyrinth.

And I can't be sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's more than one ending.

The one I got pretty much yells 'SEQUEL' at the top of its lungs, though. Hopefully it'll do well enough to get one which will fix all the little problems this has, because it's frustratingly close to being great as opposed to just good-but-annoying.

Rather have RPG-lite nowadays. Playing a 40+ RPG isn't viable for me anymore. KH2 for me was a perfect game for length as there was plenty to do, but didn't out stay its welcome.

FFXII I've tried many times to play through, but getting so far I just end up finding something more interesting to occupy my time.

It's hugely charming, which carries it through its weaker moments. And the combat's fun but flawed, which just about sums up the game in general, really.

It's also shorter than your average JRPG, but because it's not turn-based combat, it seems to cover about the same amount of ground. And the loading times are quite quick (compared to Lost Odyssey, say).

The mainstream media seems incapable of producing decent JRPG reviews. They always seem to feel the need to tailor the reviews for the non-fans by constantly referring back to the two or three games which they think everyone will have heard of, whether they're relevant or not. Specific JRPG sites do much better reviews, and word of mouth is second to none.

For instance, I scored FFXII 7/10, but check Metacritic and you'll find that most sites scored it 9 or 10. Looking at the sites which scored it 8 or below, those reviews are the ones which point out exactly the gripes that I had with the game.

But that really brings us around to personal choice. JRPGs are hardly comparable in technical prowess terms, so basically it all comes down to how much you enjoy the story and the battle system - both of which are very personal things and opinion can vary wildly. Trying to give a game in this genre a mark for 'everyone' is sometimes supremely difficult.

Oh, and as you're doing reviews... Famitsu gave it 9 8 8 7 (32 / 40).

I struggle with JRPG reviews. I've seen so many high scores given to games that I found barely worth playing and vice-versa. What I usually do is read what the JRPG fans say as I find their opinion of a JRPG usually matches up to mine far better than Joe Reviewer.

I like the use of the word "lite". Sounds ideal for me at the moment. My copy's in the post, I'm assured. Be nice to play a console RPG for a bit. I've played Titan Quest and WoW a lot this year.

Too bloody right it's not fair to compare every single RPG on the planet to Final Fantasy like FF's some kind of pinnacle of RPGing. It isn't. There are loads of RPGs which crap all over FF. FF's all about teh shinies. Grr.
