LittleBigPlanet shared user content to be region specific

Sony has confirmed to CVG today that LittleBigPlanet players in different regions will not be able to download their user-created levels from one another.

Pete Smith, who oversees operations at Media Molecule said: “We’ve got regional servers, but we can move levels around on servers whenever we want. But you won’t have access to the Japanese servers.”

LittleBigPlanet will be released on October 29.

So we EU’s get US and EU content?

It’s a shame, but I guess the language barrier makes a huge difference.

I am fien, Everyone will wnat to play with my levels anyway, I am a veritable foutnain of imaginativity.

Why would a language barrier make a difference in downloading a level for a game.

  3. Psychotext said:

    It wouldn’t. :(

Stupid decisions like this and the “no pics unless they’re from the eyetoy” one really take the shine off the game for me.

  4. morriss said:

I didn’t even know that. I don’t have eyetoy and don’t intend getting one.

I’d guess they’d actually have to go out of their way to make content across all servers. And they just can’t be arsed.

Can we take levels from the PS3 and upload them to PC’s and share them that way? It might be a way of circumnavigating this barrier.

  6. morriss said:

Good idea. I’m sure someone’ll find a way until Sony updates the firmware to stop it.

  7. ecu said:

I dunno, I don’t think they’re trying to stop people sharing the stuff. It’s not a security measure of anything. I reckon it’s just more effort and expense on their part to have global servers for the uploaded files.

  8. morriss said:

    Then charge for it.

    LittleBigIrony.

  10. ecu said:

You’re suggesting they charge you to play LBP online just so you can share levels between regions?

  11. No_PUDding said:

Apparently there is a photo uploading version in the latest build at GC, so it looks like the Eyetoy will avoid beign the only means.

But this, well that’s just silly.

And Language barriers DO matter in LBP, becuase the create will write the instructions and speech bubbles, and will also name it.

Language difference make a huge… difference in LittleBigPlanet.

No, I’m suggesting they charge for PSN and thus ditch stuff like Motorstorm demo only being available to Qore subscribers and making compromises on some gameplay features due to server running costs.

  13. Psychotext said:

No_PUDding: The demo versions have always had it, but they refuse to say that it’s going to be in the full game.

  14. No_PUDding said:

I am glad they don’t. I don’t want to pay to use internet I already bought.

I’d prefer buy the magazine. Or let some other chumps do it.

  15. morriss said:

I’d prefer to pay a minimal amount and then at least I’d have a right to complain when shit don’t work as it should or they nerf certain features due to network maintenance costs.

  16. ecu said:

Sony would receive a much worse backlash if they suddenly went pay to play, than they will from keeping this in.

  17. FireFly said:

What do they mean by “region”. BD regions? That’ll be worse….or would it? And I agree with ecu and No_PUDding about the PSN payment thing.

    i like pie.

  19. No_PUDding said:

Yer you coudl complain, but who says anythign would be done about it?

If PSN suddenly becomes a paying service, I quit online gaming. Simple as. Apart from TF2 on PC.

  20. Trip SkyWay said:

Annoying decision. Is it based on disc region or IP?

  21. ecu said:

IIRC Sony have done it before with other games, and it’s done on disc region.

  22. Psychotext said:

ecu, most games these days are done on IP. It was done by game region at the beginning though.

Awesomesauce (From SCE on the EU forums):

Hi all, as many of you may have heard already in an interview at Leipzig the senior producer for LittleBigPlanet announced that the game is region locked. This is in fact not the case, and all shared levels in the game will be available worldwide. The confusion arose out of regional differences in how moderation will work as there are different legal rules each region have to play by, and at one point this looked like it may require the game to be independent in each region – however this has been worked around and there will only be one region for the game…. a LittleBigRegion.

Apologies for any confusion over this issue, however I’m pretty sure you’re happy with the result.
