FFXIII to feature new style and have no main character

PS3F reports that FFXIII will feature a new style where there is no main character in the game.

The quote is taken from a Famistu interview with game director, Motomu Toriyama.

From the piece:

Toriyama then talks about a “new style” where FFXIII will not have an actual main character. Instead, players will experience the story from the viewpoints of different characters. One of the main focuses of the demo will be to allow players to try out this “new style.” The battle system also allows you to switch characters; it will be party-based and the player will switch between each character during combat.

Hmm. They’re not keeping Gambits, then?

Are you ever going to run my Suikoden Tierkreis story, Bowden? :-D

They already said they’re not keeping gambits.

And XII never had a main character as such, so I’m not sure what they’re doing with this.

I hope it will be good but personally i find it a bit difficult to have a game with no main character as i tend to lose focus on what i’m doing or how to develop my party. However i have enough faith in Square-Enix that their “New Style” will overcome this.

Hmm? Surely Vaan was the main character in XII? You always controlled him.

Blerk: But he wasn’t the lead character in the context of the story. You just had to walk him around the non-combat areas.

And Square seems to have a really short memory; FFVI has no “lead” character either.

Final Fantasy VI never really had a “main” character either – and that worked brilliantly, so yeah! Bring this on!

Frankly, as long as they *don’t* do gambits, I’ll be looking forward to this.

Can I be late to the party and also point out that VI never had a main character either (or 1 come to think of it – and XI, technically)? And yes that did work brilliantly.
