360 outsells PS3 nearly 3:1 in Japan thanks to Vesperia

It appears signing up exclusive RPGs wasn’t the stupidest thing Microsoft could have done in Japan. Xbox 360 sold almost 25,000 units in the past week on the back of Namco’s Tales of Vesperia, dwarfing a PS3 struggling to maintain even 10,000 per week.

Data for week ending August 10. Thanks, Media Create.

  • Nintendo DS – 60,434
  • PSP – 58,501
  • Wii – 38,506
  • Xbox 360 – 24,962
  • PlayStation 3 – 9,673
  • PlayStation 2- 8,503

Two things – it’ll be interesting to see if these sales holds up in the coming weeks, or if it’ll be much like the Metal Gear effect the PlayStation 3 felt.

Second, after this boost in sales, I’m wondering what the sales figures for major forthcoming Xbox 360 releases in Japan will be like.

I’m sure it’ll drop off pretty quickly, but there are still a few hard-hitting Japanese-friendly titles to come on the 360 this year, so it might not drop back quite as far as it did before. Infinite Undiscovery is out soon, for a start.

No. The stupidest thing would be to sign them up and then not get them released in that territory.

You’ve got to give MS their due in Japan. They really have gone out of their way to provide the territory with the JRPG’s it craves. To be honest, I think Sony have been shockingly complacent regarding Japan. Unless I’ve completely missed something, what big Japanese exclusives have they tied up for release in the region?

Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles, Final Fantasy XIII (sort of), FF XIII Versus (for now) and…. that’s about it.

Given they ran out of stock in a few places I doubt next week’s numbers will be anything special. Still… cats and dogs living together etc, especially as the DS overtook the PSP again.

@Robo_1
+1 – MS have really changed a lot in their approach to Japan this time round and the 360 is the console of choice for JRPGs – something I never really expected and something really lacking in the PS3 line-up. They have also done an exceptional job of getting near global releases for the JRPGs they have funded /snaffled – so extra kudos there too.

Sony seem to have just expected people to develop them for the PS3 where MS have been pro-active.

Wow 15’000 units above the PS3 in one week. I guess this means world-domination for the 360, as Mattrick predicted … ;)
