Sony: We want Sackboy to be “emblematic character”

LittleBigPlanet is a big deal to Sony, so much so that the firm wants Sackboy to be the console’s emblem.

“We want LittleBigPlanet to lead the charge into a new genre of gaming and turn Sackboy into the next emblematic character for the PS3,” said SCEA product manager Mark Valledor in an interview with Adage.

“We have coined 2008 ‘the year of the PS3′ and are confident that with the launch of LittleBigPlanet we will continue to see the momentum build throughout the end of this year and on to the next. … This is a very big title for us.”

Plenty more through there.

I hope they are not going to cry when LBP is not the huge success.

I’m getting LBP. I bought the PS3 for the blu-ray and to see if LBP would live up to the hype. As an artist I am compelled to play this game.
That being said, if it isn’t a great success, Sony had better just start looking forward to the PS4 and coming up with something incredible to match XBL and it’s NetFlix coupe…

@wz
It’s already a huge success with the positive press it gets for itself and Sony.

DrDamn: I’d just bet it’s no commercial success at all, although the idea behind it is just great. This is of course in line with the PlayStation 3 as such.

The commercial success of the game itself is irrelevant. The announcement at E3 in 2007 gave Sony a massive, much needed boost in the press and since then it continues to get exceptional positive exposure. Sony don’t really have any other exclusive titles with this sort of impact. It doesn’t matter if anyone buys it – the press love it and Sony have already benefited from it.

Sackboy is a much better console emblem than Crash Bandicoot. :-D

True!

But then almost anything would be.
