360 outsold PS3 in the US in July, says Pachter

Just got this from Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter:

We estimate sell-through of 650,000 Wii, 275,000 Xbox 360 and 250,000 PS3 consoles. Our console sell-through forecasts reflect our belief that supplies for Wii hardware were steady this month (we expect a supply increase to hit the U.S. in August), and our belief that Xbox 360 hardware sales grew in the month due to recent clearance pricing for the Xbox 360 Pro (20Gb) to $299 from $349.

NPD figures for July are to be released on Thursday this week.

I guess they purposely kept it a secret so as not to kill 20gb sales, given that they’re not doing an official discount over here.

Could work out an overall total. Anyone have Pachter’s full predictions? It’s hard to compare everyone with just these numbers.

Bit of a shock this month. So with no clearance sales next month, will there be a bigger gap between the 360 or PS3? Has the tide turned? Or is this just a blip? Gears round the corner, that will surely kick start sales again.

Hard to tell. Can look at the weekly sales as a comparison for exactly what they did (June vs July 08):

Wii – 133.3k vs 138.8k (4.06% increase)
PS3 – 81.1k vs 56.2k (30.67% decrease)
360 – 44.0k vs 51.2k (16.47% increase)
PSP – 67.5k vs 55.4k (17.86% decrease)
NDS – 156.6k vs 152.1k (2.87% decrease)
PS2 – 37.8k vs 38.9k (2.95% increase)

Introduction of the 60gb model in August may have an effect on the 360. Don’t really know where the PS3 is trending to now the MGS4 bump is wearing off.

Yeah, that’s right. Also, doing a quick comparison on the total numbers we have for Pachter / NPD (EEDAR) predictions on the PS3, 360 and Wii…

Real: 985k

Me: 1004k
Pachter: 1175k
EEDAR: 1213k

or summing the total difference in each prediction:

Me: 135k off
Pachter: 190k off
EEDAR: 228k off

I am teh winnrar! Even though I was miles out too. :P

I don’t understand how EEDAR’s predictions were so wrong. Slightly askew, yeah, but not more than 20% out.

Pro analysts aren’t very good at the hardware side of things. I’ll dig up some prediction charts later which show how laughable they can be. :)
