More users report PS3 Firmware 2.42 issues
As you can see from this thread on the US PS Blog, people are complaining about disc-read errors after installing the latest PS3 Firmware, version 2.42.
Posters are casting aspersions on the validity of some of the complaints, but this comes after a previous report of similar issues at the weekend.
Trawl through that thread and see for yourself, assuming you’ve finished punching brick walls for the evening.

Edit: I like how the first reply immiedietly starts talking about filing a lawsuit. Bless America.

…strange. I heard of all the problems (disc read errors, save game deleting, etc) BEFORE this update – I even had the disc read error a while ago (had to get a whole new PS3). These are not triggered by the firmware.

They really should try to get fewer but bigger updates out. The more firmware updates they put out, the more chance there is of this sort of thing happening.

Well, all I can say is that before this update, I had a Blu-Ray disc (Prison Break, S1 – Disc 6) that would not play in my PS3 (Launch 60 GB). It played in my friends 60 GB, it played in a Dual HD/Blu-Ray DVD player, it played everywhere it should, except my Playstation 3. After this update, it works fine again. Who knows ?

Mine gets pretty loud tbh. Not as bad as Xbox of course, but still audible over a film or a game at low volume.

The 40gb versions are quite a bit quieter than the 60gb, due to a shrink in the chip set.
No problems with 2.42 here either. You have to wonder how many variables there are on these consoles, that some would be effected, and others not.

Robo_1: Oddly enough, I’ve heard quite the opposite. Whilst they did slim down the chipset on the 40gb they also changed the cooling system quite a lot (to reduce weight). I’ve never heard both together though so I can’t really comment.

Interesting. Well I’m only going off second hand information myself, but it’s certainly plausible that they went for a slightly cheaper (and louder) cooling system to reduce costs.

I’ve got a brand new 40Gb machine and it’s quiet as the grave. You can hardly hear it, seriously. It just hums a bit.

Well, mine starts off quiet for the first 15 mins or so, but when the fans kick in I can hear them whirring from more than say 20 feet away.
The 360 I can hear from the end of the garden though!

So any news on this? Has Sony reacted yet? Cause I got my PS3 back a couple of days ago and quiet like to play online again (or grab some stuff from the PS Store if there was anything) but can’t since you have to have the newest firmware which I’m not going to download until I know what’s going on.
