Gears of War 2 to feature both language and violence filters

According to this WhatTheyPlay story, Gears of War 2 is to ship with filters for both violence and swearing.

From the piece:

Gears of War 2 will be released on November 7, but has already received an “M” rating from the ESRB, for “Blood and Gore,” “Intense Violence,” and “Strong Language.” For many families, that may immediately eliminate it as a possibility as a holiday gift. However, a new point of negotiation will become a factor this year; Gears of War 2 includes filters for both the violence, and the language. Microsoft informs us that the violence filter “turns the blood into sparks,” while the language filter “takes out all the swear words.”

Commendable. More through the link.

I’d like to see MTV-style pixellation of the nasty bits instead.

This isn’t commendable – it’s stupid. If you shouldn’t play Gears 2 with blood and swearing then you shouldn’t be playing the game full stop. It’s still an incredibly violent game. This sort of concession is a very bad precedent and will lead to parents thinking the game is suitable for their kids.

More badass indeed. This could be brilliant though. Marcus chainsawing the locust in half while telling them to freak off and confetti flying everywhere.

I was playing at the weekend and there was some guy letting his 10 year old daughter talk on the headset at 01:30 in the morning.. I don’t think even parenting classes would help someone like that.

That stuff about kids is unimportant.

What I want to know is whether it has a ‘brown filter’ or not?
