Robo_1: well I'm glad you're happy with the port but my observations were that while Half-Life 2 and Portal were OK, Episode 1 slowed down horribly at certain sections and Episode 2 was worse still. Still, all in the eye of the beholder and all that...

Biggest issue with the Orange Box port was Portal and loading.

The quality of the PS3 version of Orange Box is one of the biggest myths this gen. Having played all but the end of Episode 2, it only slowed down once significantly, and once mildly, and that first instance was clearly some sort of bug (which the patch likely fixed) rather than anything hectic happening on screen.

Personally I've no interest in Left For Dead, but given EA's recent, big sales on PS3, coupled with the fact that they're a year on coding for PS3, it seems like a no brainer to me.

The poor PS3 Orange Box port wasn't entirely EA's fault.

There are a few reasons no one in the industry uses Valves Source engine & one major reason is because it is way too focused on PC game development.

Valve were very late to the game when it came to the consoles (obviously as they are one of the few devs remaining that put the PC first). The Orange Box was taking games already developed and shoehorning them onto the Xbox 360 when their own code was not designed to run on those machines architecture (they admitted so at the last game developer conference).

On top of that Valve has a perhaps not too publicly known bias for Microsoft platforms and coupled with the source engines poor performance the PS3 version got the shaft and EA did what they could with it.

The quality of a Left4Dead PS3 port will entirely come down to whether they have properly optimized the source engine for the Xbox 360 or are doing another crappy PC port. If source has been improved for the Xbox 360 then the odds of a PS3 version will fare a lot better.

No, it was as bad as everyone said it was, and the patch made no difference to the graphical performance.

Yeah, their port of the Orange Box was supposed to be really bad, but it wasn't as bad as everyone said it was, apparently. And it was patched, too, I believe.

Would be good if true. EA are really doing the PS3 a good service (unsurprising given their recent sales figures).

I know they got a bit of criticism for their Orange Box port, but from what I hear, it wasn't as bad as some reviews said, and you'd think that the experience of developing that would leave them in good stead for making a good Left 4 Dead port.
