Doom 4 to be about “winning,” says Carmack

Speaking to Shacknews at QuakeCon today, id’s John Carmack said that Doom 4 isn’t going to be a survival horror. Stop the press.

“It’s not that you’re running around frightened down to your last bullet [in Doom 4],” added Carmack.

“There will occasionally be that, but it should be much more of you winning, because that was always the point in Doom – you are the hero, and you are winning. You’re going to beat back all the hordes of Hell using all the tools at your disposal.”

John Carmack may have taken top place in the “which developer we love most” list for that. Winning. Winning for the win.

Doom has NEVER been survival horror… it’s always been action horror. You know, a game where you blast holes into hordes of monsters and feel like a giant badass, where you can carry 8 million guns at once and all the ammo in the world. A game where you pull the trigger on your BFG and every monster in the room explodes.

Survival horror is just the opposite. Survival Horror is a genre where you’re a total weakling and the entire world is out to kill you, and you dread every encounter because it could be your last.

Demons and Monsters =/= Survival Horror
