Hirai: Sony’s internal studios more important than any third-party exclusive

Tuesday, 29th July 2008 07:30 GMT By Patrick Garratt

Final Fantasy XIII? Grand Theft Auto? Who needs ‘em? According to global PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai, the answer is a resounding, “Not Sony.”

When queried about the issue by MCV, Hirai replied, “On the exclusivity front – whether it’s downloadable or not – one of the unrivalled strengths we have, and we’ve proven this time and time again, is the power of our internal worldwide studios. Our first-party product is obviously platform exclusive and is the best out there.”

Titles like Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and SOCOM will serve as a “raft” for the company – keeping them afloat amongst a sea of competition.

Will those games be enough to stave off Microsoft’s increasingly-aggressive assault, though? Hey, don’t look at us for the answer. We’re not Michael Pachter.

    You see, I agree with him on this point – Sony’s internal studios are really good, for the most part. But of late, they don’t appear to be working on many titles that I find very appealing.

    In the past this short-fall was more than made up for by digging into the vast array of platform-exclusive third-party titles… which have now dried up.

    Your internal studios are important, but you shouldn’t flippantly piss away the third party stuff. 99% of my sizeable PS2 collection is third-party games, and I’m willing to bet at least half of those were only available on the PS2.

    I think the problem is that they have to “flippantly piss away third party exclusives” because they are not going to happen – not the big ones anyway. Unless you pay big wonga for the exclusive or a timed exclusive. So this generation the internal devs are absolutely key.

    I tend to agree on your other point – Sony’s internal studios are very good – they just aren’t delivering currently.

    Resistance 2 = brown yawn
    Killzone 2 = grey yawn
    SOCOM = big yawn

    Motorstrom, on the other hand, looks genuinely fun, but isn’t a system seller as far as I’m concerned. God of War 3 defo is, though.

    @SticKboy
    Resistance 2 = brown? Have you actually taken time to look at vids and screen shots? It’s got a very varied colour scheme. Even more so in comparison to Gears 2 and Killzone 2.
