I reckon he should re-invent Frogger in his own style.

I love Space Giraffe. People glance at it without playing it or learning its nuances and ignorantly protest it’s nothing new. Those that can get to grips with the multi-layered gameplay and, in particular, the way it delivers crucial game information (hint: don’t rely on your eys so much) know what a treasure this is.

I also love Gridrunner++, fantastic game and the first time you work out how to perform a sheepie-save it’s magic. Again, it opens up a whole new layer of gameplay that was totally unexpected.

I think Jeff’s problem is that most gamers (particularly the vocal ones) are too entrenched in their comfort zones to rise to the challenge of something that breaks some conventions here and there. Which, amusingly enough, flys right in the face of those same vocal gamers who always appear to be crying out for someone to do something a little different.

There’s a video of the Gridrunner+++’s gameplay (including the C64 and Vic20 modes in the XBLA game) doing the rounds on YouTube.

I’d very much like to see a Minter/Treasure collaboration. They are, without doubt, the two finest pure shooter architects out there.

There are plenty of quirky and innovative games that have sold many, many more copies than Space Giraffe. The problem is that SG was too much of a niche game. People can bleat all they want about Minter being a genius and SG being overlooked but the truth is the visual style and game mechanics just didn’t appeal to most gamers.

Visual style eh?

I’ll remember that next time someone bleats about gameplay over graphics :)

Not a popular opinion… but leave the retro where it belongs. Long dead and buried. There are very, very few games deserving of remakes and this is not one of them.
