PT: Well of course, in the end the market always settles that matter. But it's still nice to hear how the companies see their products perform. (Especially with Sony.)

I think the simple answer is the same as with any system. It will be around for as long as it's capable of selling for.

A few months back Iwata spoke of the lifetime expectancy of the Wii. IIRC, it was quite long (10yrs?), but I cannot seem to find the link.

I personally think that the Wii will end up hurting Nintendo in the long run.

It seems that most of the people who own one are either kids or 'casual gamers'. Every single adult that I know that has one (with no kids) never, ever plays it anymore (including my fiance) or never really did. Matter of fact, they stopped playing the Wii within a month of owning it. While 'hardcore gamers' froth at the mouth for the next great game coming out on the 360 or PS3 and sit around talking about innovations in online community and 'what's next', Wii owners have their console sitting next to their DVD player as a status symbol.

The end result will affect Nintendo in the next generation of consoles. I mean, I can't wait for the Xbox 720, and if Sony can get their stuff together before finances force them out of the game, the PS4, can you? I look forward to the future of gaming and what games will be like in 5 years. Do you know any adult with a Wii whom you are sure will buy the next version. I believe 90%+ of Wii adult Wii owners will have the 'why do I need another one? this one still works and I never play it' thought running through their head. I just can't see casual gamers wanting to fork out their money for another paperweight. Can you?

I think MS is setting pretty (reaaaaally pretty), Sony has an uphill battle (for sure) but can still pull it around if they really try (price drop, at least 10 AAA titles within the next 12 months), but Nintendo has sort of painted themselves in a corner, in my opinion.

Yep, agree. I can't believe how well they're selling. Neither can Iwata, from the sound of it.

I don't reckon Nintendo will even contemplate a new Wii or handheld for the time being. Why would they? I can easily see both of them lasting another five years - probably more for the DS.
