Reggie: ‘How could core gamers feel left out?’

Many gamers were apparently disappointed with the lack of “core” titles at Nintendo’s E3 conference last night, but Nintendo of America boss man Reggie Fils-Aimes doesn’t understand why they all feel left out.

“How could you feel left out? The Animal Crossing that we’ve been hearing about that people wanted,” he told G4. “Fully connected to the internet, go to other people’s towns. Plus as I said, Grand Theft Auto on the DS. How do you feel left out with those types of announcements?

“Make no mistake, Mr Iwata said quite clearly: Mario teams, Zelda teams are working, they’re bringing product out for Wii this generation. We’re going to continue to bring all our best franchises to both of our key platforms and continue driving that experience both core as well as brand new consumers.”

To be honest Reggie, we don’t think the problem “core” gamers have is with the quality. It’s the quantity.

Thanks, CVG

    It’s both. Do one, Nintendo.

What a pro. Suggesting concern and spinning it into a sales pitch.

FWIW, previous GTA portable efforts were quite good fun. But I couldn’t give a flying fuck about Zelda. There’s only so many decades of pushing blocks onto switches and throwing boomerangs across a room before you realise that it’s the same game every single time.

    glol! Reggie. He’s a diamond, isn’t he?

I don’t know why everyone’s moaning. Animal Crossing alone will easily carry the 18-35 male demographic on a global level for 2008.

I don’t think there’s a facepalm big enough for this.

Still, they don’t care. These gamers may have kept them afloat in the gamecube era but they don’t need them now.

He’s the diamond in the rock. *laughs*

Funny thing with the Wii is, there might be a lack of “core”, but when Nintendo actually does release one, they sell in droves. Nintendo likes to tease, I guess.

It’s almost as embarassing as the conference itself.

maybe its the quantity of quality

how many stand out games have been released for Wii?

As misguided and… well, just plain wrong as he is, I can sort of see why he might think Anumal Crossing is “core” – the Cube game was, after all, a cult phenomenon for a while.

The sad thing is, Nintendo (and their second party studios) really do know how to me “core” gamers’ games – Metroid Prime 3 is probably the best example of this – but they come along once in a blue moon.

Come on, they’ve done Metroid, Mario and Zelda once. Even if we stick to Nintendo’s existing franchsies, we’re surely due a Starfox game; a Pikmin game; a F-Zero game… and so on.

I don’t blame Nintendo for focussing on Wii Sports Resort and all that, but it is galling that they’re pretending they did otherwise.

Might be so that “core gamer” is not universally that FPS-playing 18-35 male.

I think Nintendo’s core gamers /are/ the people who play Animal Crossing, and they buy that game a lot more than anyone bought Metroid Prime.

    Core Gamers got Dead Rising.

Actually where the hell did the term core gamer come from anyway? What the fuck’s a core gamer? Harcore gamer? Casual Gamer? What’s a core gamer then? Someone who plays Apple dashboard stuff?

  14. Killerbee said:

“Core gamer” – it’s one of those meaningless labels, I agree, but in the context of this, I think it means anyone who bought a Wii (primarily) to play Mario Galaxy, Zelda: TP and Metroid Prime 3 rather than Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

Fatal Frame – which worryingly, even Reggie doesn’t appear to know about, and also The Conduit, that Nintendo opts to shun widespread promotion of.

No, everyone in that group obviously wants to instead play CoD5: shakey-shake-shake, which aims to recreate the unnerving nature of the conflict featured, by sending increasingly stronger vibration feedback to anyone whose Wii remote doesn’t point at the screen for any particular ten seconds. It’s like the squad leader’s sitting on that sofa, next to you, barking orders! :D

    Oh so gamers then.

There’s no need for the core, in fact it works better if you describe fat sun-reading mums and their horrible chav offspring that love a bit of Wii-ing as “Core gamers”
