MAG: Aim was to make game achieveable on no other platform, says Zipper

Speaking to Gamespot after the Sony E3 press conference last night, Zipper Interactive lead designer Andy Beaudoin said that the aim of the newly-announced Massive Action Game was the create something that couldn’t be achieved on any other hardware.

“Obviously, with PlayStation 3 we’ve got a lot more power we can tap into to try to create different games, so we sat down and tried to figure out how we could take a lot of the shooter experience we had… and create a game that was going to be unrivaled,” he said. “Basically one that could only be done on the PlayStation 3.”

The game was revealed in the conference for the very first time last night, showing 256-player combat in a futuristic war setting.

Well, maybe they’re right. But exactly how couldn’t it be done on any other console?

I’ll wager that to clarify they’d say something about blu-ray and also something about SPUs.

This is more of the sega famed “Blast Processing” non-sense, remember that vaporware! Most games support a certain number of players, not because they cannot support more, but because of the hassle of managing all those players be it in game design, execution or code. Plus in many cases it dilutes the overall experience even on huge maps.

This tale about “being able to be done on PS3″ is baloney. It’s more of the mine is bigger than yours arument.

Sony is just throwing out a number here. Playing a statistics game.

Also what happens when someone else be it MS or otherwise matches that number of players in their game on 360 or PC? More egg on Sony’s face, that’s what.

Honestly, Most of the next wave of games will support anywhere from 2 to 64 players. I think that is extremely flexible to maintain lag free, enjoyable experience.
