id’s Carmack talks up Doom 4 – better than Rage

In an interview with MaximumPC, id Software co-founder and software engineer John Carmack says that the id 5 technology used in Rage has been given such an overhaul that Doom 4 will appear to be an entirely different new game engine all together.

“It’s going to look like a totally new game engine on there, even though it’s going to be built on the four years of effort that we spent developing this generation of technology.”

He goes on to say the Doom 4 will run at 30fps, which is why they can cram so much detail in.

Is it just me, or does Carmack seem just a little bit more sublime than your average FPS shooter developer?

And he’s building rockets too!

He’s John Carmack. You can’t see John Carmack. He’s about as “average” as the beardy man born in the stable under the wandering star ;)

Now that you mention that, maybe the world’s gonna end soon.
With all those interviews of late, it might be a sign or so.

Of course it’ll look like a completely new game engine; most of the time it’ll be in complete darkness.

Please John, no more torch sims. Please.
