Microsoft’s confirmed the long-rumoured 60Gb Xbox 360 SKU for the US, as well as officially announcing a price cut for the current 20Gb machine.
The 60Gb console will ship in “early August,” according to the press release, and is priced at $349.
The 20Gb SKU has now dropped $50 to $299, and is to be available “while supplies last.”
“We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we’re giving it to them at no extra charge,” said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. “No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you’ll have three times the storage to manage all that great content.”

There we are, then.

So if I’ve understood this right, MS aren’t actually giving 360 a price cut, they’re just clearing old stock, ahead of introducing a new model.
Surely this isn’t what people had hoped for! Given Sony have pretty much announced that they’re locking the price of PS3 for the foreseeable future, MS could have really turned up the pressure by introducing this new bundle at 299.99, instead of this fleeting ‘promo’.
This reeks of a missed opportunity.

Well, it is kind of a price cut. It depends how long the 20Gb model lasts, I guess, as to how valuable it’ll be for people looking to get in cheaper. Even mid-term, though, the price effectively won’t have dropped at all.

How much are the 60Gb HDDs on their own?

It wasn’t in the press release.

Ok

Looks like exactly what Sony did with the 80gb model in the US.
Go go pointless value adding rather than real price cuts.

Interesting side point – Amazon.com are now selling at the lower price of $299 but they are also quite heavily discounting the Elite – now $399 instead of $449. Obviously they realise it was fairly shit value compared to a premium. The price is hidden by a “click to see price” thing too.

Is that what Sony did a half dozen times in the space of a year with the PS3? At least you’ll be able to do something with the extra space on the 360 hard-drive; unlike the PS3 ones, which just get clogged up with more and more and more and more “installations”.

People, what’s wrong? From what I read, the 20GB model costs $350 now, will be costing $300 soon, so that is, by definition, a price cut! No matter what the reasons are, whether that’s because of some end-of-life manoeuvre or because Jesus told ‘em to.

y are you ps3 fanboys posting here? seems like a 360 gamers blog. are you guys stalking us? maybe you 360 fans should put up an ip blocker, whenever you use your computer, looks like ps3 fanboys are tired of their MGS4(which is the only game i would play on ps3) and decided to see when the next over-rated ps3 game is coming out. Wuts wrong, tired of your slow as s**t 8x bd drive? the only thing its good for is playing movies. drive is so slow, some games copy themselves to the hard drive, to speed up loading time. sometimes the same files have to be copied several times onto the same disc, to recuce the travelling time of the laser. and i seriously rolled on the floor laughing, when i found out that ps3 has 256MB of GDDR3 ram. at least my computer has 512 MB of GDDR3(same with 360). and 360s GPU has 37 million more transistors in its graphics processor.

pman2323, what the hell are you talking about?? 360 gamers blog?? I really hope for your sake that you meant that this particular news item is for “360 gamers only”, and not the entire videogaming247 site…

Re: Michael
Christ, not everything has to be a Sony vs MS thing you know. It’s a pretty half hearted price cut, you must see that. Sony were in a position where they simply couldn’t sell the machine at the price they were asking for it, and so had to shave as much off the price as they could, whenever they could.
It was just as messy and ugly a way of doing things, but they had little choice. MS here (imo of course) have missed an opportunity to put some real pressure on Sony, and make the price of the console a real deciding factor.
As for your trolltastic hard drive comments, yeah, installations are rubbish, and I’m absolutely no fan of them at all, my own hard drive being full to bursting with them. On the flip side though, I can go out and buy an off the shelf 250gb hard drive for significantly less than you’d have to cough up for one of MS’s propriety HD’s, so it all balances itself out.

This is all so unexpected!
Bet they drop the prices of the whole product range in the run-up to Christmas (in the US, at least). Just you watch.

Actually, aren’t we expecting some revised 360 hardware sometime soon? I wonder if these new boxes will be the new die-shrunk ‘anti-exploding’ model?
patlike said:
I don’t reckon a slimline machine will happen. I’ll be very surprised if it did.
Blerk said:
I didn’t mean a slimline – they’re supposed to be revising the graphics chip, are they not? Down to 65nm? Where’s Psychotext when you need him?
Psychotext said:
September. Slimline is unlikely until next year sometime.
Blerk said:
Ah. Probably not, then. Unless they’ve ramped that project up to get it done by August.

I reckon it’ll be like the elite. The first boxes were Zephyr before switching to Falcon. These will be Falcon before switching to Jasper.

My prediction: the rcde SKU will be phased out either just before or just after Xmas, depending on how well stock sells until then. After that, the X360 will return to a three SKU range, and probably allow devs to require hard drive installs.
