Sony pulls Firmware 2.40

“Whoops.” According to various reports, Sony’s removed Firmware 2.40 from its servers following mass reports of system lock-ups.

Several threads on the US PlayStation boards came to light earlier today saying the software was causing PS3s to simply stop working.

The firm said it was investigating the complaints earlier this evening and has now removed the software entirely.

More soon.

Blimey! Glad it didn’t brick mine.

That’s the brother of all fuck ups.

Yep. PR mega-disaster. Right before E3, too.

At least anyone affected should get their systems replaced free of charge now. It’s not like they could deny there was any issue.

  5. Do you remember when you could plug consoles in and play games immediately on them? Great days.

It’s no wonder people carp about having no time to play games these days – they spend half their ‘gaming time’ downloading updates, patches, firmware upgrades and the like, then installing the same before they can even consider starting to play. And that’s assuming their machine hasn’t been bricked in the process.

The one console that avoids all this bollocks? The DS. And it’s the biggest console in the world. Go figure.

Point. Well made. An’ all that.

I remember when games took half an hour to load and you had to sit in the room watching them load or they wouldn’t work.

    But I’m old. =(

I used to do brilliant “loading noise impressions”. My dad thought so anyway.

    UK101 loading times ftl.

Are you sure you don’t have a problem CRAZYSPYD3R?

  16. XDamage said:

If it actually happened to anyone then it seems like it’s the unavoidable unlucky few who effed up the install for some unrelated reason. Might be a few after any update I guess.

At least one can find the people with Blu-ray drive problems online. Wierd.

These things happen. It doesn’t seem too widespread so far, and they seem to be handling it pretty well apart from the Rubenstein denial which makes them look stupid. As long as they replace or fix any bricked machines it should be fine.
